Default Washington DC

Unfortunately it will be a fly in trip rather than a bike trip, but I am looking for some suggestions on where to stay in DC.
We want to see the White House, the Smithsonian and the regular sites.
We will then rent a car, work our way down to Myrtle Beach and fly back to
Texas.
We usually stay at moderately price hotels.
Any suggestions/tips appreciated.

Stay in one of the suburbs at a hotel close to the subway and ride it in to DC. Parking is bad downtown and hotels are high in the city. I like the Arlington or Alexandria area. Arlington is a little closer. I have stayed at a Comfort Inn and a Court Yard by Marriot in that area. I look for something with in a block or two of a subway station.

yup, that is the ticket. Try a search for hotels in Crystal City, VA, and pick your favorite. It is located next to the Pentagon, so you can come here and visit the 911 exhibit, Hall of Heroes (dedicated to Medal of Honor winners), etc... there is a guided tour you can take here also (http://www.dtic.mil/ref/html/Welcome/tours.html). Crystal City has a Metro that can take you downtown to the mall where the Vietnam Memorial as well as the museums! There are plenty of rental places in Xtal City, since it is located beside National Airport. So you can get out of Dodge quickly when it comes time! And the trip to Myrtle will be 8 hours, in case you were curious.
