Have ridden many tours in the eastern US. I started out zooming from spot to spot but quickly realized establishing a base and exploring an area more fully worked better. So far, my favorite base camp spots are Lake George New York, Seneca Rocks West Virginia and the General Smokey Mountains area. My biggest surprise was how cool riding from southeast Pennsylvania south thru eastern Delaware and looping back up along the west side of the eastern Chesapeake was. The hummingbirds at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge were amazing.

 

From Chicago, almost all my road trips are to the western and southwestern states although I’ve done a few south, from Atlanta and along the gulf coast to Galveston, the Smokies and a couple Civil War battlefield tours, one to Shiloh and Vicksburg and one to Chickamauga/Chattennooga but posts like yours are great suggesting other good points of reference to note for possible future trips.
