Make sure to bring a picture ID and a certified birth certificate to get through customs. Some time soon passports will be required. I've used a passport for years so I haven't kept current with the requirements. Also have your insurance agent issue you a Canada Non-Resident Inter-Province Motor Vehicle Insurance Card.
Make sure to ride the Cabot Trail around Cape Breton Island - the northern secton of Nova Scotia. The mountain and shore views are fantastic. Everyone seems to hit Peggys Cove just southwest of Halifax. It's a quaint fishing village with a nice restaurant on the rocks overlooking the ocean. Prince Edward Island is also a scenic area.
A good alternate to Nova Scotia is a tour of Vermont and New Hampshire. Both states are scenic in their own ways. Route 209 (Delaware Water Gap) in PA and either the Taconic Parkway or Rte 22 in NY are all good routes to include as ways to take to get up here or to Canada.
