Default Great River Road Help

Next month I am going to Illinois about 30 miles East of St. Louis. I am trying to decide on rather or not to take the GRR North or South. I have about 3 days to ride and I am looking for anyone 's advice. Thanks in advance.

The Great River Road out from Alton to Grafton is a nice ride, but short. You could always ride on north on 96 and cross into Mo at Louisiana or Hannibal, then come back south on 79, and cross back over into IL on either the Brussels or Golden Eagle ferry (kinda fun). Going south, one of my favorite rides on the eastside is just outside Columbia, IL.The road is called Bluff Road. If you're headed southon I-255, get off on Route 3 atColumbia, take the 1st exit, go right, follow it to a stop sign, and then go straight. Thisroad rides just at the base of the bluffs for many miles and you get many wide open vistas, although you never get too close to the river (levees, etc.). Fort De Chartres is a nice stop along the way.You can loop back to Route 3 and headnorth, or if out for a longer ride, take the ferry across to Ste. Genevive, MO (historic river town, nice place to eat, etc.) and then ride Hwy. 61 north to Festus/Crystal City where 61 and Hwy 67 join together, keep going north until you get to lower Arnold (Richardson Rd.), give up the ghost and cut over and get on I-55. Finally I-55 to I-255 and back to wherever you're starting from in IL. Since I'm from Festus, I do this southern ride quite often. If you come across the river, though, don't forget your helmet! I hope this wasn't too long winded.

Thank you for the info. I am thinking the South route is the way to go. Will be in Highland Ill to stay all night. Will start riding on Friday morning and have to be back in Indy on Monday afternoon.

Short trip but a trip none the less. Thanks again.
