Going to leave for Yellowstone national park August 1st from kelso Washington. I was just wondering if anybody had any advice on the good and bad[:'(]. Taking 84 to 86 to yellowstone and coming back via 90 to 12. Any input will be appreciated. By the way rollin on a 07 DWG, it will be my longest ride. All other rides have been less then 1200 miles, this will be a little over 2000. thanks

lots of ways...kelso to lewiston, down 95 to Banks, east to Stanley, down thru sun valley, east thru crater of the moon, continue east to jackson hole, north into the south entrance.
&nbsp\\;
home:&nbsp\\; out thru west yellowstone, west to salmon idaho, north to lolo pass, west to orofino, follow the river home.
&nbsp\\;
SW Montana is worthy of a bit of wandering, central Idaho as well...hard to go wrong!
...hey, do you know mountain doctor?

Hope you have reservations... camping space can get scarce in the park that time of year... A room will&nbsp\\;even be harder to get...&nbsp\\; I tried last week to get a room for three nights, nothing... Well they did have one room for one night but it was on the wrong end of the park for me... So I managed to get some reserved camping space at the Canyon campground... I'll be there Aug. 9th - 11th... Enjoy the park it is awesome... My favorite place to go in eary Sept...

I'll be there August 6-8, heading down after a stopover in Sturgis, staying at the Antler Inn in Jackson, then heading into Idaho, Utah, and eastward through Colorado. If anyone will be in the area, would be happy to hook up and ride.

Zillions of USFS or BLM campgrounds in the area. You'll won't get any peace-n-quite camping in the Park, unless you are going backcountry. If you are, PM me. I'd suggest starting on I-90 and going down to Red Lodge. That is a fun town to spend a night. Good local beer. Then take the Beartooth Hwy and enter the Park through Cooke City. In the Park, you'll head through the Lamar Valley, lots of wildlife. I'd suggest heading south at Tower to go over the high point of the park and down along the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Then you'll come though the Hayden Valley, one of the prettiest spots along the Park roads. Then by Fishing Bridge, Yellowstone Lake, West Thumb geyser basin. At West Thumb you can head south to Grand Teton or west to Old Faithful. The road between West Thumb and Old faithful crosses the Divide three times. Local cyclists call it "Triple Bypass." Then go along the Firehole River, Old Faithful, Middle Basin, etc. to Madison Junction. Exit at West. From West, take US 287 to Ennis. From there, I'd suggest going west on MT 287 to Virginia City, then to Twin Bridges, down to Dillon, and then west on MT 278 into the Big Hole (cont'd)

The Big Hole is IMO one of the most beautiful valleys in Montana, that and the West Boulder. In the Big Hole, take the side trip to Bannack (unrestored ghost town, 1st capital of MT) From Wisdom, take MT 43 to Lost Trail Pass. Check out the Big Hole Battlefield on the way. At the pass, you could go south to Salmon, ID or north into the Bitterroot on US 93. I suggest the Bitterroot. Stop at the brewery in Hamilton. When you hit Lolo, head west up to Lolo pass and Idaho (this is the famous 77 miles of twisties). PM is you have any questions about routes/places in MT. This route will get you into more scenery, away from the tourist hordes as much as possible and away from the ripoff tourist traps, except Red Lodge, which is worth it.
