It's the ride not the destination, enjoy every minute of it. Allow enough time to be able to stay on two lane roads as much as possible. Drink lot's of water. I rode my FXDXI from WV to Colorado on Rt 50. Then Colorado's ten must do rides, and back home. The trip was just over 5,000 miles in ten days. The last day included some interstate.
Early mornings after the bike was loaded up I'd check tire pressure and the oil. I never had to add air, I did add 1/2 qt Mobil 1 on the last day when I thought it was reading close to the add line. I checked it the day after I returned and it was slightly over full. Point being it used under 1/2 qt over 5,200 miles, some of it at pretty brisk speeds. I was very pleased with that. I don't think I could have done it on the stock seat, and the Boss Bags were great! Oh, have a great time and drink lots of water!
BTW I didn't take my windshield. There was one time in Kansas, it was pouring down rain and I missed it. The rest of the ride I was glad it was hanging in the garage. For me my Dyna is quieter and the air is smoother without it.
Water. Water. Water. Windshield. Floorboards. Highway pegs or Lindby bar.
Had done 1,200 - 2,000 - 1,500 on my FXDL without any problems. Sold it last month to buy a Road King. The King is for sale and I'll be getting another FXD of some sort.

A good windshield will make a huge difference. Mid mounts + highway pegs. Do you have a good saddle? An airhawk cushion might help if you're on the stocker. Maybe try a Throttle Rocker.
Michigan to Sturgis, Sturgis into Wyoming then Colorado, into Kanas then back home on the back of a 09 low rider, about 3800 mi in 9 days. Last day was 799 miles. Super comfortable bike.
