I will be heading south from Minneapolis MN to Memphis TN over Memorial weekend. Planning to follow the Mississippi to St. Louis. Any great little towns anybody could recommend? I will have camping gear so any campgrounds or cheap hotels would be good to know about. Thinking I will stay in/around Dubuque IA and then somewhere around St.Louis. Let me know
Sounds like a fun trip. We've done Davenport to Red Wing several time and I'm kind of partial to the Iowa side of the river. It just seem like you stay closer to the river. We always like to stop at Marquette and Guttenburg. Nice little river towns. If you stay in Dubuque, make a short side trip to Galena, Il. It's only 15-20 minutes but worth the ride.
Pere Marquette state park is right before Alton, IL. It's real pretty around there. If you stay there, you "must" stop at Fast Eddies on the main drag in Alton for lunch/dinner. Great biker place and cheap/good food.
Depending on your ride schedule your can try camping at Goose Island campgrounds at Hwy 35 and Cty Hwy GI on the south end of Lacrosse County Wisconsin.
The river road coming south is a great ride. When you enter a town called Grafton, Illinois, you must stop in the Load Dock. If you are passing through during the weekend, you will have great music and a beautiful outside beer patio and open bar area. I have had a blast there many times!
About a half hour further south you will come to Alton, Illinois. As mentioned earlier, another outstanding stop is Fast Eddie's. Best peel and east shrimp and coldest beer.....GUARANTEED!
