My wife and I rode our Ultra from New Mexico to Alaska. We carried three sets of clothing that we rolled up individually then used zip ties to hold in place. Nothing was larger than a soda can! For tools one thing that we took because of a friend was a pump for the shocks. In Canada you are not "suppose" to carry a pistol and my 870 would have drawn too much attention sooooooo! We took a small MSR stove and two bottles of fuel, tire repair kit, pump, first aid kit, knife, maps of our route, cash and a couple water bottles. Other than that we got it as we needed it. This was one wonderful trip...What a way to celebrate our 20th Anniversary
Fishheadsaid, how did you attach the banjo? My mandolin will fit in the hard bag. I have been know to put the fiddle on the tour pack rack. I tried to attach the guitar on top of the luggage in the passenger seat and the tour pack, just did not trust it. It's good to see someone else taking their homemade music with them.

I use a Reunion Blues leather gig bag, I wrap the banjo inside with two trash bags, one from the top, one overlapping from the bottom with a twist. Heavy persistant rains I'll also wrap the outside of the gig bag.
The bottom of the bag sits on my right saddlebag, it's attached to my Kuryakin tourpak with two tungsten carbiners that clip to the steel strap points on the back of the gig bag. I then attach a strap around the base of the neck (aerostich part number #1900).
Two years ago I rode for 4 days with tropical storm Barry on my way up to Nova Scotia.
I got soaked to the bone, but the banjer stayed nice and dry.
Hopefully we'll meet up on the road someday and do a little picking.
Busking for beers in the campgrounds is half the fun.
