Headed up the Great River Road from St. Louis to Red Wing, MN in July. Then on up to Duluth and North Shore to Canada. Any suggestions on must see stops or restaurants. Will go out of my way for a great mom and pops eating joint. Also would appreciate any info on weather in July along the north shore.
I was in Marquette Michigan Last year in July, and the wind coming off Lake Superior was COLD --Windy and about 55 degrees. Away from the lake, it was in the 70's.
Skip the Twin Cities unless there's someone or something there you wanna see. Follow 95 up from I-94 following the MN side of the St. Croix river to Taylors Falls. There I'd recommend crossing the river into WI and taking some back roads up to Superior and then cut back to Duluth to follow Superior up.
Yup...If the wind is blowing off the lake the temp can drop 20 deg.
There's a great camp site if you don't mind leaving your bike 10 minutes away and using the provided cart, roll your stuff in to the cart in site #1 at Tettgouche State Park just north of Silver Bay. Camp 20 feet above Superior and fall asleep to the thunder of the waves rolling into the cliff below. If you're an early riser you can sit at the edge of the cliff and catch the sun rise out of Superior.
Just north of there, you gotta hit up SR1 through Finland and up to Ely...it's arguably the best road MN has to offer. It's a road worth of turning around and riding again.
Do yourself a favor and cross to the East side of the River in Lansing Iowa. I have done both sides of this trip, and from Lansing, crossing into WI, then North to Prescott Wis is DEFINATELY the way to go.
Best Burger for 100 miles in Superior Wi. This little joint is near the Harbor, and is like the 1000's of Navy bars all over the world. Most character you can see in the area. They have won awards for their food (dive bar style) than oany other there. Here is a link. http://splendidtable.publicradio.org...nchorbar.shtml
PM me if you want any info fromteh MN/WI/IA border to Canada...

The weather on Lake Superior depends on which way the wind blows. It can be 85 and great or it can be 50 degrees and fog and rain. Beautiful scenery, Split Rock Light house and Gooseberry falls are good stops on teh way up from Duluth. Right out of Duluth take old 61 to Two Harbors. Runs right along the lake and off the 4 lane. Canal Park in Duluth is a neat stop in Duluth.
Further south in Wabasha Minnesota there is the National Eagle Center that I've heard is nice. Coming up the river I would cross over at Dubuque Iowa to the Wisconsin side and run that up to LaCrosse.
