the wife and I did the 1 and 101 in the SF area last week it is not a bad ride through town it does follow the 280 for a little bit just try to avoid the rush hours and you should be fine.

This is the best way through the SF area the other freeways suck. Take 280 to 92, 92 to Halfmoon Bay it will take youto Santa Cruz you can pick up Hwy 1 there. Check the news Santa Cruz mountains are on fire now. You can stay on 280 to San Jose take Hwy 17 to Santa Cruz Hwy 1. Hwy 1 is a nice ride if you are not in a hurry.

We took this way to L.A. last year and this year took 101 to Oregon to Hwy 5 up to Seattle great time!!

Just did lolo pass from the north Missoula to Lewiston a couple of weeks ago. There is construction about 75 miles north of Lewiston, ID for about 50 miles. When I was there I beleive there were three stops that you had to wait for a pilot car sometimes 15 to 30 minutes. Also where they are installing new drainage culverts they are not quite level and are almost like speed bumps. All in all still a must do ride and the construction is not a big deal just go slow and plan extra time. Also make sure you have water with you so if its hot and you are stopped you can stay hydrated. It is a very scenic and pretty drive. Enjoy your trip. As far as the Oregon coast its very pretty and scenic as well, but you will encounter a fair amount of traffic and parts of it maybe slow going, also pay attention along 101 because alot of tourist cages are not, they are just watching the scenery.
I stayed at a Best Western in Clarkston, WA just accross the river from Lewiston, ID vey nice place and friendly people, they also have supplys to wash your bike if so desired. I tend not to do that when I am on the road unless I ride on the beach like Daytona. Great rooms as well. Just a FYI.
