York, PA
The other option, as posted, 80 to 219 to 56 to 30 is really pretty too. It seems like you are riding on top the trees. Not much traffic this route. The mountains in McConnelsberg are really fun...many Turns.
Both routes feature the opportunity for many 4 legged creatures...keep your eyes out for them and watch those big yellow signs indicating turns...especially on 56.
Gettysburg is cool. We checked out the 'cyclorama' 360 painting of the battle there.
Hwy 30 between 81 and Gettysburg and between Gettysburg and York is a nightmare, imo. It's many many miles of a 3 lane road w/ wide shoulders, that is under construction, so be prepared if you go down it. I've never seen anything like it in my life. 30 miles on one leg alone, hardly ever saw anyone in the left (center) turn lane, but miles of cars backed up behind semis. Should have just made it a 4 lane road, and used the same amount of pavement since it had wide shoulders. It was just a part of the trip, since we wanted to go through Gettysburg, wasn't sure how to avoid it, but I'd really recommend not going through here if you're in a hurry, or at 'rush hour'
Aside from that, if you arrive in York in the evening after a day's ride, I'd get there early between 8-8:30. They say tours start at 9, but when we were there they let a few groups in starting at 8:30, and by 9 the lines were getting longer.
We rode 219 all the way up to Elkins WV, that was cool, then road from Elkins to York.
Then, after the tour, we road down some highways until we could get to the very start of Skyline Dr, and road it all the way til it ends that same day, and stayed in Waynesboro VA. Then got up and road the BRP all the way to Fancy Gap before heading back this way. Another day and we might have been able to go onto the Dragon, but we did do the dragon earlier in the spring.
FWIW, I remembered reading here about section of the BRP that were closed, but when we were there, we road it all they way down to Fancy Gap w/ no problems. I did see some new pavement, and construction signs. By the time we got to BRP it was Saturday already, so maybe they stopped construction on those sections for the weekend, or were wrapping up in general anyway.
We ran out of time, but wanted to see the http://luraycaverns.com/ on the way down the parkway. Maybe next time.
Also, there are things in Asheville to see, or not too far away, Hwy 9 from Asheville down to Lake Lure and Chimney Rock is a nice ride.
I don't know how many days you have allocated, but it takes awhile to go down Skyline and BRP, all the way to Maggie Valley, and ultimately to go to the Dragon. And depending on your group's comfort/skill level, I would want to be fresh for the Dragon, especially if you plan on riding it in any sort of aggressive fashion, so just keep that in mind.
I did enjoy my stay at the http://www.ironhorsenc.com/ when in the area for the Dragon. There are several sections of 28 that are a nice ride in that area as well.
Good luck and have fun!
