A buddy and I usually take a 10-14 trip each summer. Last summer, it was the west coast and back (Penna) in 11 days. This year, we are contemplating a tour of Texas. The only catch - it has to be done during the summer due to his work schedule. Are we nutz for riding into Texas during the hot months of summer?
Coming back from the 95th anniversary in June, 1998, we found that Texas along I-40 was hot. The good thing was that in Texas they have really nice roadside parks about every 60 or 70 miles. We put all the stuff in our pockets in the saddle bags, so nothing would get wet, and then just hosed down at each rest stop. There were water hoses at each of the stops, and we would get our cloths completely soaked. By the next rest stop we were just about dry, and time to soak again. The evaporation keep things just about the right cool but we did get some strange looks from other travelers.
No offense to the Texans here, I used to live there and love the state, but did you ever hear the quote..."If I owned Hell and half of Texas, I'd rent out TX. cause Hell is cooler."
Actually, I really enjoy driving through TX, but haven't done it on a bike. Be ready for some very fast traffic there though. There's some mighty long stretches and they like to go fast. Seems to me like you could always find someone or many someones travelling between 90 and 105 mph.
Yea it gets hot in Texas but go far it. I remember back in 87 and 88 when we went to Sturgis it was hot as hell leaving Texas but you can do it. You get to hot just pull over some where and cool off carry you some water. And yes some of them idiots do drive fast on the interstates but you don't have to keep up with em just let em go.[sm=goodidea.gif]
The heat isn't so much a problem as some areas where there is high humidity. As long as you are motelling it, you will do fine. If you were camping out, I'd suggest a cooler state. To really enjoy Texas, stay off the interstate, ride through the hill country, Big Bend, east Texas and while you are in this neck of the woods, go up towards the Ozarks in western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma. I believe you'll enjoy the visit. Look some of us up while you are out here.
C'mon down to God's country. Heat is relative, and as long as you use some common sense, you'll be fine. Lotsa water, plenty of breaks, maybe a siesta in the heat of the afternoon.
East Texas Piney Woods is beautiful any time of year. If you wanna see Texas, and are coming in from PA way, stop in here in Jefferson and I'll feed you, then point some sweet back roads to whatever direction you want. We'll try and get y'all hooked up throughout the state.
East Texas, Hill Country, Big Bend, Guadalupe Mountains, Panhandle - Texas! It's a whole 'nother country!

You're welcome at my place anytime Brother.Like us Texans say if you do'nt like the weather in Texas just wait a few minutes it will change.

Texas ain't HOT. Yuma, Arizona is HOT. 118 in the summer, and no problems. Put an oil cooler on the bike, and you'll be fine. I'm planning a ride to Myrtle Beach on June 30, I will motor through Texas on July 1, no problem. It'll be hot, Dallas is hot, but I'll cover my skin, and drink some water every hour.
Bill, I kinda like the idea of hosing myself down...I can definitely see how the crowd around you would think you've lost your ever lovin' mind!
