I'm in line where Canvey island is tied on, and if I ever find the rope. Only been to Scotland once and that was enough. Suffolk is nice, but I think your going to find anywhere in the UK expensive after America. We had a place in Florida until a few years ago, glad I sold it when I did, could probably buy it for half of what I sold it for now.
Canvey Island.....I know the area.
London excepted, I'm not sure that cost of living in the UK is higher than in the US. Different things are expensive. What Americans would notice immediately is the cost of ownership of cars and motorcycles. Of course, cost of living varies considerably across the US. I live in a fairly remote ski town, and one pays for the lifestyle.
I have a place in Donegal that I can only visit once yearly. Cost of ownership in the Republic is among the lowest in Europe, I'm sure. Costs me a lot less than my home in Montana. But my wife (an Australian who spent much of her childhood in the UK) really would like to move to the UK. At the least, I'd certainly like spending more time there than I do now.
Of course, Donegal is also pretty remote. But now that Connemara is well parceled out, the self-styled euro-chic Dubliners are looking for new places to buy second homes where they can teach their kids to be Irish Property is going up....
You sold your Florida place at the right time. You could probably buy it back for a tenth now, never mind a half.
A lady that works for me and her husband just spent 2 weeks there this summer, 2nd year doing it... they loved it... I would like to go over there but i think i would like to ride some of the Alps first? Ireland does look nice but i am not sure i would like the rain...Southern France for me i think...Plus i speak fluent French.

That's no something you should admit to.
Tha Alps is probably my favorite place to ride, the German , Swiss and Austrian roads are good, almost as soon as you get into Italy they deterioate, but it's hard not to like Italy. I'm planning next years trip to Faakar See now, we need to sort out the best route with the best passes .

I'd be proud to be a southern redneck too. As for being bilingual that makes you better than most English speaking people , I can manage some German and a little Portugese. English speakers tend to be lazy because just about everywhere you go they speak some English so most of us don't bother, and I'm as guilty as most.
as for the French / English thing you have to remember we have been fighting them for a thousand years, last time they won was 1066, although the EEC is doing a pretty good job right now.
Quit fighting the english when i moved to Toronto...Used my bilinguilism to get a Customer service job with a major international company that paid about 20% more than english speaking only. AH AH AH !!! Merci Beaucoup les Anglais....

If that were true, wouldn't HM The Queen be sovereign over Normandy, Poitou, Angers, Touraine, Aquitaine, Brittany, Gascony, Anjou, Auvergne, Maine.......?

We had a bit of mist the second day, and a few drops, but overall the weather was like springtime here.
