Well as you can see from my avatar, I am kinda fond of old route 66. Not sure when but am planning on cruising the entire route. Yes all 2400 miles.
Has anyone on this board made this trek?
I have been on most of it from Jackson Street in Chicago to Santa Monica Pier. In my opinion it is an awesome ride.
A lot of it is now under Interstate, and other parts are real hard to find. There is a stretch in Ill. out in the middle of nowhere that is made of brick.
Before you do a trip like this read the books by Michael Wallis. He was hired by HD as a tour guide when they had their Rt. 66 ride back in 1996. He is an expert on the road, how to find it all and things to see.
I've done a few portions here and there but nothing beats the portion from Needles, CA through Sitgreaves Pass and on to Kingman, AZ. Much of it in other parts of the country is very fragmented and hard to find but this stretch is not and it's about 125 to 150 miles in length.
If you do a google search on 'Route 66' you'll find all kinds of information and resources to help with your planning.
What is HD charging for the Tour this year? When I went in 1996 it was about 125.00 per person, and that included a t-shirt, pins for each town stopped in, and some other trinkets.
Of course you had to pay for you own meals, motels, etc. but it wasn't that expensive, and the guidance from Michel Wallis was invaluable to trip.

The cheapest is $4795 single rider/double occupancy and your own bike. It's on the HD website.
4800 is ridiculous, even with the rooms paid and gas paid. A mid priced room should be about 70.00 per night for 16 nights would be about 1100, and gas for one bike at 40 MPG for 2500 miles at 3.00 per gal. is about 210.00. Where is the other 3500 going?
I am sure they will fill the tour up, but it won't be with me.
