Default Due West From ATL

We're planning on doing a ride out west from Atlanta this summer. Possibly to the Grand Canyon and back. I'd kind of like to stay away from Texas, take a more northerly route, and I'd like to go through Colorado. We'd like to stay off of the interstates as much as possible.

Any of you folks been on a ride like this that you can suggest.
Thanks!

I've been from Witchita to Pueblo which was in interesting ride, even in a cage. It took us through Greensburg the month after the tornado and also through Dodge City. It follows much of the Santa Fe Trail. It ain't Deal's Gap, but hey; it's Kansas. Eastern Colorado was some pretty country. We didn't go straight from Atlanta to Witchita as we went through St. Louis and KC, but you might want a more direct route through Memphis.

My son, who was 10 at the time, said that the people along that route were some of the nicest people he'd ever met; and coming from South Georgia, that's a compliment.

I know you wanted to avoid both the interstates and Texas but I usually head out of Atlanta towards Memphis then I-40 all the way to Amarillo, TX.

Then US 287 to US 87 west into New Mexico. From there take US 64 all the way to the Grand Canyon or...

In the northwest corner of New Mexico is the Four Corners area and, of course, the Navajo Nation (quite depressed). Continue into Utah and then take US 163 down through Monument Valley.

FWIW, many of the back roads are in a rather sad state of repair and, IMHO, takes a lot of the pleasure out of riding them.

I'm heading to that area of the country again late spring and will take most of the route above.

Good luck and ride safe!

Unless you are looking for something special in the midwestern states your best bet would be to take the interstate and get that part of the trip over with.. Taking the backroads just prolongs the trip.. Believe me you will see a lot of country on this trip.. Some advice.. stay away from OKC and OK because of the condition of the Interstate.. I was thru there last Sept. , went from west to east on I40 and the expansion joints will put you and your shocks to a bone jarring test..

Also if you can check on the repair work in Memphis.. They had the big bridge down to one lane east bound and the exchange on the west side very screwed up with little or poor signage..East side of Mempis was no problem..Butt, all that may change by summer..
