Mexico is not safe period! A shocking 32% of all non-natural deaths of U.S. citizens outside this country occur in Mexico. Many of these deaths are a direct result of poor or nonexistent safety standards both inside and outside of the resorts. To read tragic Mexico vacation DEATH stories, many written by heartbroken family members as well as stories written by victims that "survived" their Mexico vacation go to:

After reading this and if you go anywhere near Mexico then you deserve what ever may happen to you.

In 07 I rode from Brownsville to Tapachula, via the Panamerican Highway, along the Pacific Coast while I was headed to Ushuaia, Argentina. On the way back I rode the Gulf Coast, and again crossed at Brownsville. I enjoyed the country and people enough, that I wanted to go back and explore, instead of just going thru. I did that last May, and spent the whole month in Mexico exploring.

The naysayers were there for me, explaining how the Narcos and Federalies were going to get me in the crossfire. If they didn't get me, the Swine Flu would. Naturally, the people warning me had never been there themselves, but a friend said.......

I was told Central America was a lawless wasteland with no redeeming value. South America would be worse. Surely if I made it that far, I would be kidnapped and held for ransom in Colombia.

Of course, none of this was my experience. All I found were smiling children, and adults that were interested in my trip and wanted to do what they could to help me, in any way I needed.

Make a good plan, obey the laws, stay out of situations that could turn dangerous, and you will be fine. If you listen to everybody telling you how stupid you are for even considering the trip, you will miss seeing a beautiful country with great riding, and some of the friendliest people on earth.

I rode from Key West to Ushuaia, turned around and rode to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska and then back to Key West. Never once was I threatened, or did I feel I was in any danger. I am more affraid riding around Miami, Chicago, Detroit, L.A. New York, I think you get the idea.

I would be happy to help you plan your trip if you decide to go.
Granted, you may have had a great trip ... If luck is on your side ... Or call it whatever you like. We did pretty much the same thing and had a great trip ... Witnessed some poor unfortunates (so I can say 1st hand that this crap REALLYY happens ... in broad daylight) and heard many a story from other tourists who escaped with their lives.

This is NOT a joke ... and should NOT be entered into without knowing there may be consequences! Sure, we all take chances, when travelling anywhere .. Even here in Canada AND the USA... Difference is ... If you get into trouble here at home your likelihood of surviving or getting help from the authorities is greatly increased .... Down there, where corruption is rampant, your chances are exponentially lower!

Giving someone advise should be given not only with what you yourself have experienced but also the pertinent information that is so readily available from others who offer a different perspective should be considered. Look at it from outside the box! The lives of those you offer your advise to, may depend on the whole picture before they make an informed decision.

Lawlessness is a reality, nowadays ... especially in Mexico and South America. People are being gunned down in the streets in Columbia on a daily basis .... Not by the 'bad guys' but by the police. They have adopted a new policy ... Shoot first, ask questions later. Completely innocent people are dying in the crossfire. Sad reality ... Sure as hell is! But it is still a reality. We all know and have adopted good sense (or at least try to) when traveling anywhere in the world. Problem is, you don't even have to put yourself in harms way .... It will find you. It's only a matter of time or a turn of the roulette wheel (so to speak).

Just because you and I came home unscathed .. DOESN'T MEAN EVERYONE WILL!

Go for it Munch34m. A few have tried to tell you valid reasons not to go, but some people have to see for themselves. I wouldn't ride there on someone else's bike, much less my own. Wish you a safe trip though. Be sure and post when you get back.....

My wife has worked in Mexico 3 months per year for the last ten years travelling the country inspecting hotels. She love's it, and has never had a problem. Her secret, don't look for drugs, and don't travel at night. Keep some bribe cash handy for the cops.

BTW, we just came back last night from a great 10 days in Ixtapa. It was great!

I've lived along the US/MEXICO border area for decades. Since 2007, we won't go back into Mexico, and our BAJA 1000 buddies and their teams won't go back either. The tourist traps like Cabo, Mazatlan and Acupulco are only safe because they are security-ringed enclaves. Don't travel outside of them! The government and police have ALWAYS been corrupt, the problem is the narcotrafficante wars where anyone in the crossfire is just unlucky. Lest you think I'm just piling on here consider this: The death count does not include the counting of children. Mexico is a rich country, and not a third-world nation. Today, Columbia and Peru are 10 times safer to travel in than is Mexico. I lived in south america at the height of the Sendero Luminoso terrorism, so I'm speaking from personal experience here.

Glad to hear that you and your wife have had good experiences in Mexico, but to be fair, it sounds like she's an experienced business traveller with a lot of experience in Mexico as well as a support network in country to give good advice and assist as necessary. A gringo tourist riding a $20K bike might not fair as well.

I guess you are right there. I've taught her as much as I can to be "street smart", and she never enters a situation where she doesn't feel comfortable in. Her company reimburses for bribe money. We do always comment on the other gringo's that are wearing gold, flashing cash, getting drunk, and then are surprised that they get robbed?
