South of Jackson is the town of Alpine. It's much cheaper to stay there, and the ride from Jackson to Alpine is very pretty. From Alpine, the ride south through Star Valley is gorgeous. I would swing west at the junction and go through Randlolph and Woodruff, UT and on down to Evanston, WY. At Evanston I would continue south along the Mirror Lake Highway. That highway follows the upper Provo River down to Kamas, where you'll head south to Francis. At Francis, I'd take the Wolf Creek Pass/Hanna road down to Hwy. 40. From there you'll head east through Vernal and on over to Estes Park. This would be a two day ride from Alpine to Estes Park. You'd probably want to spend the night in Vernal.

Anybody else have thoughts about a route to RMNP from GTNP?
The ride from Jackson down to Evanston is beautiful. I turned west on 80 went to Rock Springs Wy and turned south down through the Flaming Gorge to Vernal, UT. Then 40 over to Estes Park. Just my .02

I just cancelled a room at the Beartooth Inn in Cody yesterday. We had reservations at two hotels for the Motor Maids and another couple decided not to go. Rooms from 7-3-10 Thru 07-08-10. Good luck.

A couple of others have mentioned the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, and I have to say its worth a couple of extra days just for the museum. It's just simply outstanding.

Default Medora

If you travel I94 check out Medora, and the ND Badlands. From there its under 200 miles into the Black Hills of SD.

Depending on where you're leaving from in Michigan, I would consider going up around the North side of Lake Michigan or maybe take the High Speed Ferry to Milwaukee.

If you're up around the North look for a place called Doc's Harley Davidson in Bonduel Wi. He has a personal museum/collection of cool stuff.

If you cross the lake on the High Speed Ferry you could swing through the Wisconsin Dells, plenty of tourist trap stuff there.

or, you could follow the Wisconsin river till it meets up with the Mississippi. Then take the Great River Rd. up to La Cross and get back on to I90. You'll add more than 2hrs or so to your ride, but it's far better than that stretch of I90.

Minor correction to prevent confusion: Rock Springs is east of Evanston.

That definitely seems like a quicker route. Does anyone know how it compares scenically? I've never ridden out to Flaming Gorge.

All this talk about reservations is making me nervous. I'm going to be doing the yellowstone and surrounding areas either the week before sturgis or the week after. HOWEVER I'm going to be camping In a 2 person tent. Trying to keep it as simple as possible. Anyway... Do y'all think I might need reservations even at local campgrounds??
Any advice would be most welcome.

If you're planning to camp in Yellowstone at all, I would get reservations. We camped at West Thumb a few years ago and the campground was full. That campground, by the way, was quite nice. Right next to the lake and centrally located within the park. I'd stay there again.
