Last summer my wife & I left Green Bay, WI then to Manitowoc, WI, loaded our bikes on the S.S. Badger ferry (must bring your own tie downs) in Manitowoc and went accross Lake Michigan to Ludington MI. Our goal on this trip was to then head north cross the Mac Bridge into the U.P. of Michigan and come back down to Green Bay taking secondary roads that ran along Lake Michigan as much as possible. We had no set milage per day we had to do or hotel reservations in any town. We decided that we would try to stay in mom & pop motels if possible and avoid the chain hotels. We had a week and if it only took us 3 days or whatever we would spend the remainder of the week at my Dad's lake house in the U.P. that was 100 miles north of our house on our way back.
The ferry trip was cool, 4 hours long but there were bars, resturaunts, etc. on board.
We left out of Ludington the morning after our arrival after I opened a map and picked a road that hungged along the lake shore, we did everyday like this and it was worth while, lot's of things to see and do. Don't want to get to lenghty here so if it this is interesting just open an atlas and whtever road stayed along the lake from Ludington, MI to Green Bay WI are the roads we took.
A couple of things along the way that were must sees in my opinion;
-Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lake Shore.
-Sunrise Motel in Northport Mi, right on Traverse Bay, great people, great place to stay, great view, nice beach.
-Take hwy 37 up the penninsula on Grand Traverse Bay to the end to Old Mission Lighthouse
-Highway 119 just southeast of Mackinaw City runs along the lake, called the tunnel of trees? awsome.
-Crossing the Mackinac bridge (pray it isn't windy that day and take it slow)
-Hwy 2 from St Ignace to Thompson, save time to hang out on the beaches right along the highway
-Palm Book Springs in Gardens Corners MI
-Fayette State Park south of Garden MI
Much more to see but those stuck out in my mind.
We left on Green Bay on Saturday and were at my Dad's place outside Stephenson MI by Wednesday afternoon, we really took our time and checked everything along the way we didn't even put 130 miles on the day we spent at Palm Book Springs & Fayette State Parks.
Nice scenery by midwest standards, let me try to post some pics here.
Sleeping Bear Dunes
Those are 40'+ boats down there
Palm Book Spring, this spring is 45' deep and stays a constant temp of 42 degrees no matter what. You pull your self across on this raft that has a veiwing area cut out of the middle, you can see the bottom like it's 3' deep and the bottom looks like a volcano from the water bubbling up through the sand. It's pretty cool by midwest standards.
Fayette State Park is an old iron smelting town from the 1800's that still has all the buildings, houses, etc. pretty interesting as well.
