Default Nova Scotia Vacation

We're doing Nova Scotia the last week of August and I'm looking for some help regarding the new CAT ferry service out of Portland,Me. Does the ferry provide tie downs and are they the ratching type or should I bring my own? When do I receice my ferry tickets/boarding pass or do I get them when I show up at the terminal? How long does the trip from Portland to Yarmouth take(I heard its 5 hours)? Any other advice or help you can provide will be appreciated. Thanks

Hey Gunfighter
We are taking the same trip, in a week or two. You can visit the site for Cat Ferry at:
http://www.catferry.com/
They take reservations. From what I understand they have 75 motorcycle tie downs spots. They supply the tie down. It was advised to take your own soft loop ends to tie to. If you do a seach here you will probibly find more info, we've discussed it here before.
Have a safe trip! We plan on leaving from Portland and returning at Bar Harbor so's we can ride a little down the Maine coast.

Get ready for a great trip, I just got back from a Raleigh, NC to Nova Scotia / Newfoundland ride Saturday.. Don't miss the Cabot Trail..

The CAT ferry does things a little differently from those of the other ferry's to Newfoundland (another story), but they bring you into the middle of the ship and you park sideways.. There are anchor points all over the deck, and they align you up so that you are between two points on the, and provide the tie-downs to strap your bike secure.. The interesting part, is most people just ran strap accross the seat, it looked to work OK, but that strap rubbing on seat didn't appeal, so I re-positioned the bike a little so that the strap would contact the frame under the front part of the seat.. I guess a nice padded strap, or just towel folded over would protect the seat enough if worried..

It seemed to work fine, as well as everybody elses, as no bikes were scattered about when we docked in Portland..

Again, get ready for great trip.. Do take the routes to the small towns / villages on the coast, get out an meet the people..

Took the Cat ferry from Bar Harbor to Yarmoth NC and back in 04. Yes they do have ratchet straps. Did not have any problems with the straps rubbing the seat. The return trip was much rougher. Stayed at a bed and breakfast in a small town I don't rember the name of in NC. Word got out that three bikers from Tennessee were there and we had a parade of people come by as we were packing to leave. If you ride the Candian version of a US interstate watch your gas gauge. Gas stations are not as plentiful as in the US and sometimes you have to make a side trip to get gas. Eat a lobster for me while you are up there. Have a good trip.
