I am a flatlander who loves the mountains, but I don't get to visit them very often. I will be going to Atlanta again on a business trip the last of May. I usually go through, Nashville to Chatanooga and then on down to Atlanta. Every year I say I am going to take an extra day or two to get some sightseeing done, but the only time I ever actually did it, I got stuck in a storm and rode the Cherohala skyway in a driving rain with almost no visibility.
This year I was planning on doing the dragon, Cherohala loop and the Blue ridge from Asheville to Cherokee as my detour to Atlanta.
Now with the dragon being closed, I am thinking about continuing east to the Boone or Blowing Rock area, picking up the blue ridge parkway and seeing Grandfather and Mitchell mountains on the way down to Cherokee.
Or maybe just doing the Cherohala and moonshiner 28. Any suggestions from those of you who are familiar with that area? If I decide to do the Blue Ridge route, where should I try to pick it up without detouring too far to the north from the Nashville, TN area? I don't mind driving 100 miles or so out of the way if it means seeing something spectacular, I just don't want to start just south of something I would've liked to see. Mountain scenery is what I am after on this detour.
You've all been great in the past when I asked for help. Thanks in advance.
From there, use Mapquest to go to Robinsville, NC - It will take you on a great majority of rt 28 almost the Deals Gap resort. You can pick up Cherohala Skyway just outside of Robbinsville.
You may not be able to run much of the blue ridge in may. Many areas closed for repair. Check where the problems are now and keep track of when they reopen and find your self some side roads to get around on. Many of the side roads can be just as nice as the BR for covering ground and the dragon ain't nothing special as a ridere get to spend time on other back roads. spend time on one of the mapping sites to find the best alternate routes . The best of the BR is from boone area to the end but many side roads are more challenging along the same streatch.
Thanks hardluk,
The only closing I see on the brp site is just sout of Asheville with an easy detour. I have been studying the net, including google earth to try to make this as good as possible, but the info I get on here is much better than I have found anywhere else.
We were just up in Litle Switzerland Friday and couldn't get on the BRP. There was some really bad ice storms and it looks like a war zone. You need to really be careful if you are planning on the parkway. There are large sections closed for repairs. We go up 226A from Marion NC. You would really be happy with some of the roads going up to the Parkway, they are every bit as good as the Dragon but less traveled.
Rochkes-I too am from IL and will be traveling to the same areas the week of 5/10/10... I too am attempting to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway, and was hoping to do the Tail of the Dragon... Looks like the Cherohala Skyway and the Moonshiner 28 and a possibly portions of the Tail of the Dragon and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Folks, please keep posting to this thread. Blue Ridge Parkway Road Closures. Thanks for listening.
rochkes This is from Blue Ridge Parkway Guide Just now.
Closed 305 to 316, 331 to 342, 355 to 375, 399 to 408, 412 to 423. Somw of the site on the net are way out of date and have some side road trips planed. and like cover before some of these side roads will make you wonder why all the hype about the dragon. Many great roads to ride. I live hear and other than takeing some friends to MT. Mitchell i don't ride the BR and don't go to the dragon. To many idgets on bought at times.
Thanks again guys. I guess I need to find a better source that gives current road closures and monitor it before I leave. I will be leaving on the last day of May. Maybe the ice damage will be cleaned up by then. I don't feel like I am missing anything with the dragon being closed. I rode it three years ago in good weather, remember it well. It was cold in early March, I didn't explore any of the rest of the area.
I would like to ride the Cherohala again on a clear day. I have friends in that area that I haven't saw since they moved down there three or four years ago. I might be better off just going straight to their house and let them lead me around. I am sure they have found the great spots in the area by now.
