Default Chicago to Dallas

Hey Everyone,

I have an oportunity to ride my rk from Chicago to Dallas for a 3 week training class. It starts on the 24th of April and I would take 2 days to come back at the end.

1st any good suggestions on a route that won't be boring? Keep in mind I have to be in Dallas by the afternoon of the 25th and can't leave the wife and kid till the 24th.

2nd what are some good weekday riding locations for the afternoon and for weekends in the DFW area.

Also does anyone know what the weather is usually like that time of year in DFW?

Any help or advice on this subject will be greatly appreciated. Posting on here cause i value the wisdom of the touring forum more than all the others.

Thanks in advance.

You might consider planning an "Iron Butt" (Saddle Sore) ride from Chicago to Dallas -- Just past the city is 1,000 miles.

Maybe take out two birds with one stone...?

I would just do the straight route via St. Louis, through MO, then across to OKC via Tulsa Take I35 from OKC to Big D. Lots of hangouts around Dallas. Strokers, Renos Chop House. Lots of tourist stufff, and plenty of cervesa, BBQ, steaks, and mexican food. The HD dealers in this area are generally reliable if you have any needs in that regard. Best riding is South and West in the Fort Worth area, (Granbury, Palo Pinto, Glen Rose, etc.), and North of Dallas. Piney woods of East TX, and the Austin Hill country are very nice, but will take a whole days ride to get there and back with a few hours of touring at the destinations. Weather will be windy, good chance of afternoon storms, some severe. Inbetween sunny and 80 to 90 degrees. PM if you need any specifics, also post in the Southwest section of this forum.

If you get a chance to do some weekend riding, I would suggest Hico for the best pie you ever had. Twenty miles away is Dublin, and they have the oldest Dr. Pepper bottling plant in the world, and it's also a neat place to stop.

Another place would be Coopers BBQ in Llano. It's about 225 miles away, so it'd be a good day's ride there and back, but the food is worth it.

There is now a Coopers BBQ in Fort Worth in the Stockyards.

While your in the metroplex here are a couple places to take in and see...
Stroker's in Dallas
Ft.Worth Stock Yards and Billy Bobs...take in one of the finest tex mexican meals at Joe T. Garcia's located near the stock Yards...Sit outside and take in the view...be prepared for a line if you get there late...
What was mentioned above are great places also...
On Your way back from Dublin Dr. Peppers bottling plant swing on over to Stephenville and eat at the Had 8 B-B-Q...Some good dinning...

if your into german food take in Munster Texas, The hole town is German, get on some of the back roads and follow them back to The metro plex...nice riding there...

Go into Down Town Dallas and see the historical monuments set up for Robert F. Kennedy...

Sounds like a perfect time to take RT66 to OKC the 35 south. Sounds like a great ride.

if you go through st louis, across to joplin on 44, then jump on 69 south. 69 will drop you right into dallas. please don't go all the way out to okc, as it's about 150 miles out of your way, and terribly boring as well. be sure to honk as you get south of checotah oklahoma at texanna rd, i'll hear you. this is about the most direct route that's not boring.
