Default Central California state highway ?

Need some advice on which of these two state highways to take going from west to east and eventually north to Reno. For those of you that know the area, would you take state highway 4 or 108 across the mountains? Time is not an issue although we are riding from Morro Bay to Reno so it's not like we've got several hours to burn. Mostly just want to know which of the two highways is a better ride. Thanks ahead of time for the info.

For what it's worth, Destination Highways (Northern California) rates Highway 4 as their #41 ride in NorCal, and Highway 108 as #8. I'm hoping to do them both in about three weeks.

Cheers,
Gordon

Thumbs up

You did`nt say when you`re leaving. Both Ebbets and Sonora passes probably will not be open until just around Memorial Day. That being said, I like 108 because the scenery is better and you intersect with 395. 395 is a good ride also and it`s a stright shot to Reno. Both 4 and 108 are narrow 2-laners over the top and part of the way down the backside. Ride safe!

Thanks guys. We'll be in the area towards the end of June and the first part of July. I looked at both highways using Google maps and probably will take the 108. Can't wait. Gordon, if you do take both in the next month, could you give me a report? Thanks again.

108 if it open is the highest over 90000 feet and real nice to see.
It will end at 395 just north of Bridgeport.

I haven't taken the 108 but I have taken the 4. As you drive east the road continues to narrow until you're on a road with no dividing line. I would call it more like a 1.5 lane road rather than a 2 lane. It is a very twisty road. It's pretty though.

If you take 108 right at the summit there is a big sign saying that you are
at the top dont' take you eyes off the road right there it makes a 90 to the
left with a dropoff on the right ten miles per hour would be safe for the turn

Definitely hwy 108. It's beautiful. I have to agree with the last post. Keep your eyes on the road over the top. I went over last August. There was still snow on the caps. Best ride I've done so far
