No man your doing it right in my mind, riding a mororcycle. Enjoy the ride man. Guys used to do it all the time on hardtails with motors that puked oil and broke down all the time. Your going in style, it's all relative.
Many guys compete in the Cannonball Scooter rally, which runs coast to coast, on scooters with 125cc up to 250cc............1200cc sounds like plenty! LOL
Last year I went from CA to VA on a '99 XL883 Sportster with no windscreen. 6,000 miles in about 9 days on a 3.3 gallon gas tank so I was looking for gas at about every 110 to 120 miles or so. I am 55 years old and I was told that I was nuts to have crossed the continent on a little girls bike. I would take that little Sportster ANYWHERE! I cant wait to do it again this year too! With a 1200cc engine you will have plenty of horsepower for uphill grades or headwinds or uphill grades AND headwinds. Take plenty of pictures along the way. If you dont take them, no one else will and then you wont have any when you are done with your trip. I wish you good luck and a safe and dry ride and enjoy yourself! You only live once in this life!
To paraphrase a HDForum member: Any wimp can put 100,000 miles on a touring bike, but it takes a real man (or woman) to put 100,000 miles on a Sportster! SPORTSTERS RULE!!!
what's your route? if your coming on i94 through mn. let me know. i can provide a rest stop, campsite if needed or just a little company for a few miles. touring is alway good even when it's bad.I put a lot of miles on 200 and 350 bridgestones as a kid. a sporty would have been a caddilac ride. (still can be) have fun
