I prayed I wouldn't get a flat.

Arizona takes good care of 66, at least through Oatman, Hackberry, and Seligman. There is some great scenery as well and well worth the ride. I just rode it 2 weeks ago and would love to go to Oatman again.
I believe that the road between newberry Springs & Ludlow is as you described but between Needles & Ludlow it's in good condition & well worth the ride.. in fact from Seligman, AZ to Ludlow, CA via Oatman is a GREAT ride & it's only necessary to get on the Interstate once to cross the river at Needles.

So where would be a good opinion of a starting point? I'm trying to find the best place to start where we are actually on 66 and not trying to find it. Keep in mind we will be coming from GA. As far as maps go where and what would be the simplist map in case I dont get a gps for the trip? And thanks for all the responses I know i'm planning the trip a ways out but I really want to ride 66! i have always wanted to even when I rode sport bikes, it's just always been something in my mind!

You need to start collecting maps & visit the rt66 web site. There's a shitload of info there & friendly folks who can get you started. Looks like you have a straight shot to ST Louis, I'd head there & ride west. reading maps while trying to find the old highway is a pain in the *** in a car & on a bike even more so. Get a gps that you can download into from a computer. Garmin makes several models with a maping program for your computer. You can find the old road on the computer software & download the whole trip into the gps. Because RT66 is now state or county roads & sometimes frontage roads that are not marked, get some good books & maps & start studying now, then plan your route, download into a gps & you'll have a great trip. Planning a trip like this is a big part of the fun.

I am leaving from Tinley Park/Chicago, and following the HOg ride it will take 2 weeks to get to LA. The cost is only $35-50 I think. I don't know if it is still open since it is starting in 2 weeks, or if you could be ready/
