Good day to all, Going from north Chicago burbs to Wisconsin Dells. Do not want the interstates. I know Rt. 12 is one option. Anybody know of some scenic but not too stop filled routes? Thanks to any and all who respond
I've taken 14 to and from Jainesville. Its not bad once you pass Woodstock. Some less traveled roads are Gilmer, Old Mchenry and rte 60; all head northwest. Once you are in Wisconsin, try to avoid Mad City if you can. Great rides in the Baraboo/Devils Lake area.
I just had a ride up to the north side of the dells from Madison. Your best bet is to have a good map with you and try to avoid any highways with numbers. All the county roads going up are really nice and will avoid most civilization. Enjoy the Dells and check out a bar and camp site called the "Edge Of The Dells" right across the street from cruising chubbys(also fun) and eat a burger at Monks bar and grill. It's right on the strip with all the t-shirt shops. They have the best burgers I've ever had.
I do take 94 just to get up there more quickly and then use the time I saved to enjoy all of the good rides up there. Once you get outside of town you can pretty much take any road you want and have a great ride. As someone above said, make sure to stop in at Monks for a burger and then go across the street and "Have a swig at Nig's"
