Default Planning New England ride - HELP!

Buddy of mine read an article in Rider Magazine about riding Northern Appalachians and now wants to head that way on our next ride. Trouble is, he's not very good at planning rides. I'm thinking of suggesting -- Starting out from OH, head over to Lake George, then maybe Lake Champlain, Grand Isle, then thru VT, NH. Plan to hit a little of Maine for a seafood dinner, swing way around Boston and ride thru a little bit of RI and CT just to say we rode in those states, back thru PA, maybe see Grand Canyon then home. One in our group likes ice cream, so I thought we'd see Ben & Jerry's in VT. One likes beer (occasionally) so I thought we could find a brewery tour in the area. Would like to see Whiteface Mountain and Mount Washington. Here's where you New England rider can help ... What else should we definitely plan to see? Roads to ride; roads to avoid; that sort of thing. Hoping to head out sometime in mid-September for a 4-day (maybe five-day) trip. Thanks for your help!

Vermont is some of the best riding New England can offer. You could spend 2 or 3 days there alone. However, for a 1 day ride thru I would suggest going around the backside (western) of Lake George up to Ft. Ticonderoga. After seeing the fort, take the ferry across Lake Champlain and work your way up to Middlebury then down rt.7 to rt.125 thru the Green Mt. Nat'l. Forest. Rt. 125 is a beautiful road, lots of twisties, ups and downs and even a couple of water falls. At the end of 125 take a left up Rt.100 and that will eventually bring you up to Ben & Jerry's Whole rt. is about 112 miles and well worth it.

While you are in the White Mountians area head down to Dover, NH to a place called Newicks... Best sea food in the area, and family run for over 50 years. I found that place when I was stationed at Pease AFB, and every time I travel up that way, we eat there.

Thanks for the suggestions. Had a nice ride planned out to include Rt. 125 in Vermont and the Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire; then down to Dover to try the seafood there, but it looks like this trip is on hold until next year. I'll keep this in my "want-to-ride" file until the timing works out better. Thanks again!

Default more planning time needed

It would be better to take more time to plan this ride out.
you may want to make it a 2 week vacation and poss plan it around 1 of the nascar race weekends, harley rendesvous weekend, americade weekend,or laconia week.manchester,nh has a budweiser brewery, don't forget about riding through the lake champlain islands which can be part of a big loop if you head north from lake george,ny to rouses point,ny and cross the bridge to vt. western mass has some beutiful mountain scenery. as for ct north east of hartford is the definition of quaint new england living. and if you like biker bars the bach door in chaplan ct is a must stop.
on sundays they have $1.00 roast beef dinners.

Default The Notches

Some of the best riding in New England is in New Hampshire, through the "notches." A notch is what the locals call a "pass" or a "cut" through a mountain range.

I-93 will get you up into the area pretty quick, and I-93 actually cuts through Franconia Notch, a great place.

The eastbound ride on Rt 302 is beautiful, right through Crawford Notch. This hooks up with the Rt 16 you'll need to get to Mt. Washington and Pinkham Notch.

Dixville Notch is a bit further north, but another real beauty. The notch itself is just a couple miles, but the scenery around the Balsams Hotel is great.

Also, don't miss out on the Kancamagus, NH Rt 112, a beautiful 30 mile mountain ride.

Bear Notch (Bear Notch Road) connects Rt 302 (Crawford Notch Rd) and Rt 112 (The Kanc)

This past weekend I rode up through Pinkham Notch and camped in the Mt. Washington area (Dolly Copp), and rode up Rt16/26 to Dixville Notch, then down Rt 3 to Crawford Notch (Rt 302), and cut over to through Bear Notch to the Kanc (Rt 112). These are far and away the best roads in New England, and I recommend this tour for anyone who appreciates truly great rides.

Click here to see a few pics I've taken of the area over the past couple years: https://www.hdforums.com/forum/membe...ches-tour.html

If you want more details, just toss me a note.

+1 on all of these suggestions. Also, if you're going through Middlebury, VT, plan on stopping by Otter Creek Brewery. They have tours at 5:00 pm when "production schedules allow", per their website. Well-crafted local brew IMO. Rt. 125 to Rt. 100 is niceeeeeeeeeeee.
