Hey just remember, you promised him a trip so make the trip about him. Have a great time and pass this great tradition on, and he will do the same. Your next trip he might be riding his own. Ride safe!

Leaving the Gettysburg area I'd suggest taking 15 up to Williamsport, then just North of Williamsport pick up 14 into Troy, then West on 6 to Wellsboro. A nice trip!!!

I live in Lancaster, Pa and husband is from Columbus, OH. Route 30 can be a pretty sweet trip in parts. The suggestion to take Rt #30 out of York and head through Gettysburg and parts west is a great suggestion. Lots of nice small towns - some really nice winding roads and some good eats along the way!

Or...possibly do it in the reverse and come in from Rt30. The Breezewood area is really nice on 30

If you have any intention of dropping to the south a bit - you might want to consider taking 222 heading south toward North East Maryland and also onto Chesapeake City - it's a great trip to the bay and takes about 1.5 hrs. from the Lancaster Area.

Another good spot along that southern route is the Conowingo Dam (Maryland) - just a short right off of 222 onto Rt. #1 and heading across the Susquehanna River at the power plant. Quite the view from the bridge and the fairly regular sightings of Bald Eagles makes it memorable.

Many, many great places in Pa to check out. This might not be your only trip this way!!

Wishing you safe travels and a wonderful bonding time with your son!

A couple things. Route 30 sounds like a good deal. Lots of small towns. Gettysburgh has a great museum. Between the battle ground, cemetery hill, little round top, the road along the confederate line, picketts charge, it will take you a good part of the day. There are many inexpensive, nice motels and resturants at Gettys.
The best roads in Pa. are north of I-80 and west of I-81. Route 120 out of Lock Haven to St. Mary is a pretty and diverse as any road in the country. Route 44 out of Jersey Shore north to route 6 and Coldesport will provide a couple hour of nothing but trees, some pretty vistas, and some hair pin turns. Waterville is the only town along the way.
The Pa. state parks in the nothern tier , Pa. wilds area are free to enter and contain some great old growth forests. Loyalsock forest, Hyner state park.

I agree with paguy. If you plan to do Gettysburg, plan to take the entire day. Waaay too much to see in an afternoon. Same goes for the HD plant. That's about 3 hours in itself. I think I would stay in the Western half of the state, this time. Lots to see and do without having to rush. For example: day 1 head to Pittsburgh. Do the Mt. Washington Incline and Ft Pitt. Head North of Rt 19 to McConnells Mills State Park. Then on to Oil City for the Drakes Well. Plenty of camping in the area. Next day on to Lake Eire and Presque Isle. East, skirting into New York then to Wellsboro and Williamsport. From there you can turn due West through Dubois or South West through Johnstown and roundout your trip with the sites in these areas.

Hey OhioSkully ---- Got my directions wrong. Go up to PA & take 6 heading EAST. PA Grand Canyon's on 6, and less than 25 miles from route 15 that'll get you down to York. 6 is a great ride.
