road trip with my son need some help. from pa people
Ok i have two choices i promised my 14yr old son who loves to ride that we would go on a road trip and he can pick what neighboring state to go to so. He has wants to hit up PA.
Now that that being said my best chance to do this is labor day weekend i have it scheduled off was going to go to chillicothe easyrider rodeo but think if i did this trip with him it would give me enough time to do it right.
Here is what i was thinking so far and need some peoples input from pa as to possible route and ideas and places to check out and see etc
leave wed sept 1st drive from columbus ohio to york pa taking our time. 383 miles
thursday get up tour the harley plant, ride all over the area and thru the gettysburg battle fields etc and visit some friends and anyother places that you guys might recommend
and head north ending the afternoon in say milton area and possibly camping at the steel stead camp.
Friday morning get up head north and into wellboro and visit the pa grand canyon
then work our way west on some scenic roads towards ohio.
I will be off from wed sept 1st to tuesday sept 6th. actually have to be back to work tuesday at 2:30pm so would plan to be back by noon or so on labor day to hang out with rest of the family
I live in Wellsboro. Take 6 west, hit the west rim of the canyon, 6 west again and stop at Kinzua Bridge in Mt Jewett. Stay on 6 to Kane & take 66 south down to Clarion & hit 80 to 76 to 71. My sister lives in Delaware OH & I've ridden this route. Nice ride.
Johnstown Flood Museum and Inclined Plane and the Quecreek Mine recue site, Flight 93 Memorial are between you and York.
Yeah, It's a must !. Also, You might want to check out Denny's Beer Barrel Pub in Clearfield just about an hour North of Johnstown. The biggest and unbelievable burgers some people had the ***** to chow down.
In Eastern PA, 611 to 32 along the Delaware river is VERY nice.
Both roads run along the canal and river, lots of nice places to eat, stop for a walk along the river, hiking the Appalachian trail at the water gap, 250 year old houses, runs through rolling hills in farm country, foot bridges over the river to islands, one way bridges over the canal, speeds 50 to 35 mph.
All the way south you get to Washingtons crossing and New Hope/Lambertville.
Its really nice during the week, weekends get more traffic in spots.
Plenty of those twisty roads with hills, where the trees overgrow the road with shade, nice in hot weather...
611 runs up to 209 and 402 in the Poccono's real nice roads also.
Ohioskully, let us know how your ride works out and anything you'd add/change. I'm back in the saddle after a bunch years and looking to cruise the central PA area myself. I'm looking to do a little camping in the PA Grand Canyon area.
SKully just got back from york PA. Check out rt30 takes you all the way to the harley plant and through gettysburg.Good place to eat is just east of breezewood at the top of a mountain on rt30 great food good prices. every time my son and I go to york we take 30 and enjoy it every time. Also call the plant to make sure they are running a production when you go, it is much better to see the line up and running. also one big favor if you could pick up a york hd plant gremlin bell i will pay you at the canton fall run.
