Well I took my wife out for our 3rd anniversary today, and since she has only been riding behind me for three days now we elected to stay in town to keep her comfortable. Well I got online and checked out what we could do. I found the National Infantry Museum. This place is GREAT, by great I mean the whole museum is free, and offers exhibits that rival the Smithsonian. It has an IMAX theater with some pretty neat shows, and a simulated firing range. We liked how they broke down all of the wars on their own respective rooms/ displays and had GREAT artifacts from each war from the Revolutionary to the current war. The diner had great service and was very nice. All in all I would say that if you are coming through Columbus and have some time to burn this place should be a must see. They have a dedicated section for medal of Honor recipients, and the 'Last 100 yards' walk was amazing and very touching. It had Helicopters, and battle vehicles, the statues looked amazingly life like, my wife had to actually touch one to believe they weren't alive! We did the firing range and it cost us $7.00 per person for 60 rds of 3rd burst automatic out of the M4, we could have gone for $5.00 for 30 rds of semi auto but how often do you get to play with an automatic M4? All in all it was a great experiance and a nice ride. Today was about 90 degrees and partly cloudy with a nice cool breeze!
Rode through there yesterday myself. Started in Valley, AL, and rode into Columbus and onto Ft. Benning. Wanted to do a little reminiscing at Benning School for Boys...rode through Jump School, OCS, Cardiac Hill, IOBC, and then out to Ranger Training Brigade. After a few "fond" memories and obscene gestures, went up to Chattahoochee HD for a visit, and then it was on to Mama Goldberg's Deli in Auburn, AL. After lunch, took 280 to Sylacauga. Hit some rain on 21 from there to Talladega, which felt pretty good with it being as hot as it was. 77 from 'Dega to Attalla was a nice ride, and then 431 back to Huntsville. Great ride, good weather (mostly).
I had heard the Infantry Museum had been redone/relocated and was just awesome. It's gotta be better than Next time I'm in town, I'm definitely going to check it out.
