Default First Road Trip

Hey there, I'm getting some leave (finally) and am riding up from south Georgia up to New Jersey and back. This is going to me my first ride that is further than about 3 hours away so I'm wondering what tips you can provide. Obviously this late in the season I'm going to need to bring a few layers of clothes and other environmental protection, but is that all I need? Any cool things I should hit up on my way there or on my way back? I'm taking 30 days of leave for this ride.

Ride info: 2009 Road King Classic w/Sundowner seat and HD low-profile rear shock

So far all I have is a starting point, a destination, and Deal's Gap somewhere in between. Other than that I was hoping see where the road will take me. I'm trying to avoid I-95 those types of roads because there's always people in such a hurry to get where they are going that they are willing to drive dangerously (no sleep, too fast, recklessly) and I'd prefer to actually enjoy the ride.

This is probably the last time I'll have an opportunity to ride very far in the US for the next 4.5 years, so I'm trying to make the best of it, and from what I understand Deal's Gap is one of the best places to go.

/edit- I think I want to try to set up a route where I visit at least one thing in each state so that I can say I've visited it instead of just riding through.

Since you will be in Deals Gap, you should head over to Cherokee and jump on the Blue Ridge Parkway and head north on it. Slower going but very scenic. It will run in to Skyline Drive which ends in Front Royal, Va. If I was heading north from Deals Gap and had 30 days, that is the way I'd go.

Default Wheels Through Time Museum

From Cherokee, go north on 19 to Maggie Valley and spend a few hours (it will take at LEAST that) going through the Wheels Through Time -- the museum that runs! You won't regret it. It makes my pulse race just thinking about it! They are partial to our those who serve our country, too.

The Salty Dog Cafe is nearby and a great place to grab a bite an a refreshment.

P.S. You didn't explicitly say you were seriving, but if you are or have, thanks for that.

For sure, a 30 day trip with one of the destinations as Deals Gap. You need to make sure that you include the Blue Ridge Parkway on your list of roads. Good pavement, a slower pace and the solitude of the ride. OH yeah, the scenery ain't too bad either. Take a ride up to Grandfather Mountain and walk the mile high swinging bridge. Hold onto your bars, cause it gets pretty tight in the turns, but well worth it. Appalachian Motel at Sparta, NC is a good place to stay. A little seafood restraunt not too far away and is a treat. There's just so much to see along the parkway. You might even consider swinging thru York, PA to the Motor Company assembly plant and " Walk the Line."
