Default Moonshiner 28 This Weekend...

Well, it was either South to Florida for a 7 hour BORING ride or North to hit the Moonshiner 28 for the first time. Since Florida would have only been about 5 degrees warmer, South it is...

Heading out of Cumming, GA Saturday morning to Walhalla, SC to start at the Southern end and work our way North. We're going to try to do the whole thing Saturday and end up in Andrews, NC for the night but if we get tired or take too much time stopping for photos, who cares? Off to some dive of a hotel for the night! From Andrews, NC on Sunday, we'll hit 129 South all the way back into Georgia.

We'll take pictures this time, I promise... Since it isn't going to be in the 40's the whole time, my wife will likely pull out the camera a time or two!

Well, the trip did not go as planned, but all in all, it was a great ride. Nice views, a couple of problems with the bike, a wrong turn, but no towing service needed and I knew to head "kind of North" and with the GPS, we didn't get lost...

We headed out Saturday morning around 8:30AM to beautiful skies. A little cool, but with the layers we had on, it wasn't "chilly"...

There are still some nice colors to see out there, so if you haven't gotten out to see them yet, you'd better hurry!!!

Once I got us to Hwy 28, the twisties began:

Had to stop here for a picture:

(If you are from out West, don't laugh...

A few more pics during the day:

The wrong turn I took was in Highlands, NC... I turned onto 107 but it was okay... Nice curvy ride... Check out the GPS:

We headed North and into the Nantahala River Basin towards Andrews, NC where we would find our hotel room:

And we finally made it to the hotel!!!

It took us around 6 hours to ride from our house to the hotel.

The problems I ran into with the bike were:
Small drip of tranny fluid noticed at the hotel. I took the bike to Cherokee Cycles in Andrews, NC for it to be checked out and the leak was/is so slow, it would make it back home. Got to get a new seal kit installed. The WORST part was the forward shift arm being stripped and stripping the shaft... Had to stop in Highlands, NC to get some zip ties and tie wire to hold the forward toe shifter to the heel shifter... Other than that, everything went very well.

My wife ended up taking over 200 pictures from the back of the bike on this trip! Thanks honey!!!!!

She was happy with the weather this weekend as opposed to what we experienced last weekend... We woke up to this on Sunday morning last week:

Stay safe out there!

-Duke

Nice ride! I live just a few miles off 129 on the Tennessee side and have been meaning to make the trip down to Walhalla and back.

Great shots. I'm glad that your mechanical issues didn't get outta hand!

Yeah... That slow tranny drip/leak might turn out to be a headache for someone though...

I've had the bike back from the mech for two weekends now... He had it replacing all gaskets from the cylinder base o-rings above AND everything from the transmission main seal/quad seal OUT, including all primary seals..

He's not going to be happy to see me coming since the leak has to be coming from either the main shaft seal or the quad seal. That is going to involve pulling the whole primary off again!

Oh well... We'll see! It was a great ride either way! I've already ordered my new forward shift shaft and lever! ROCK ON!!!

We stopped for gas right before the Varsity and were told to eat there but it didn't look open! Little tiny place but we were told it was an AWESOME breakfast!

I guess we'll have to hit it again this Spring!

Wolf Gap? LOVED IT! We were headed back home and saw a turn off to the right that looked curvy on the GPS so we took it. The higher we got, the more into the clouds we went. We got up towards the top at the peak of the Fall colors and something about that "foggy light" and light mist that had everything covered in moisture made all of the colors just POP off of the black/wet trees and asphalt.

We had to ride slow of course, which made the scenery that much more enjoyable!
