Tourer
Does anyone know of a website to help plan a route. I would like to plan a trip and avoid interstates as much as possible, talking about a multi state 1 or 2 week trip. Thanks
While internet based maps are great, there's something about an old school paper map or atlas that I prefer. Not sure if it feels a little more personal or what.
Before a road trip I enjoy sitting down with my Atlas, and an adult beverage or three, and just take it in. Even if I have a certain destination in mind, maybe I'll see something that peaks my interest when looking at a map of that state or area between here & there.
When we have traveled, I have followed the route planned, or sometimes due to a whim, weather, traffic, or time tables have ended up no where near where expected. Those no where near expected moments have sometimes been the most entertaining.
We always try to visit places the locals are, restaurants bars etc.
Whatever you do, and where ever you go, take it in & enjoy.

+1 on the larger paper maps......route will change with the weather. Take your paper maps of each individual States...go to sites that tell you the best roads to ride in every State.....mark all the roads and then mark your preferred route in a different color....i find the larger maps show more roads and some parks and elevations or mountain areas....Originally Posted by KJOGlide

Some people will say to wing it but you would hate to be traveling 10 miles away from the best roads in a State.....enjoy and ride safe......

I've tried several mapping programs and found Delorme Street Atlas to be the best IMHO.
An on-line service like google maps is ok, but with Street Atlas, you can set it to avoid or prefer certain road types.

whatever state I am going in I print off multiple maps being zoomed in on mapquest. Than i do some searching on what roads are good in that state and than from what roads sound good I try to map it out the best I can to where my destination will be using the info i found on the internet. Just mark your desired route on the paper mapquest maps. Than on the trip I can just flip though pages of maps for each day

go to a truck stop and pickup a truck drivers atlas. they fit perfect in the bottom of a tour pac and are 3/8 of an inch thick. they have all the states and the larger cities maps too.
