Yeah, what they said. I wouldn't miss the BRP or Cherohala Skyway. And, if you're in that area anyway, just hit the Dragon real quick. But if you're looking for scenic, definitely the BRP and Skyway!! Foothills parkway is a nice, short road also from Townsend, Tn to one end of the Dragon. Beautiful scenery there!! Sounds like this will be one great vacation. I hope to do the same one day. Have fun
Since you mentioned fun landmarks, this website, roadamerica lets you select the state and it gives you some interesting things to see in every state. If you are in South Dakota and are heading east, you could head to the headwaters of the mighty Mississippi and actually walk across it, then you can tell your friends you walked across the Mississippi river....! Rock and roll hall of fame in Ohio, Grand canyon of PA, Niagra, way to many places to see. Sounds like a great time.
The Dragon is Hwy 129 at the Tn and NC border.. it is 11 miles of no side road, no drive ways, no mailboxes.. just 318 curves in the last 11 miles before the NC state line.. there are several websites detailing it.. just search tail of the dragon.. from the air the road looks like the spine of a dragon.. Butt.. in the same area.. there are a lot more roads that you may find to be a better ride.. you could ride for a month in just a couple of days in the area..
You guys give great suggestions. I am trying to piece together how to fit in route 66. My wife grew up in Boston and I grew up in Oklahoma. So we will have to explore the changes in those parts of the country and mooch sleeping quarters off of relatives. I spent a year in Chicago and Florida, plus six months in IDAHO with the Navy. We know that these are some places we want to go to catch up with friends. We think we might go to Long Beach for the start of the trip, seeing some friends in San Diego. for a couple of days. From there we might go up the west Coast to Washington and Idaho. Maybe that should be the end of the trip and we should ship the bike to Seattle to start. Decisions, decisions....
Keep the thoughts coming, PLEASE!
As you head out of WA, run along the Columbia River, pick up Hwy. 12 in Lewiston, ID and ride to Missoula, MT, then head north and take in Glacier National Park. This is on my top 5 rides!
Good reading all the tips for some good riding.I'm looking for forward to checking out some of these great places.Landing in LA from Australia the 1st week in May.
From Seattle heading east I would take HWY 20 over the North Cascade HWY then onto HWY 2 into Spokane . Then south to Lewiston ID and take Lolo Pass Hwy 12 to Missoula MT one of my all time favorite rides .
If you time it right you can hit the ******** Festivial near Missoula it's pretty wild it's the weekend before Sturgis so a lot of people hit it on their way to Sturgis.
Some other places to see are Glacier NP , Beartooth Pass ,PCH HWY101 the Redwoods, Utah has some great sight s and roads Zion,Bryce NP and HWY 12 .
This just some the great things to see so many more . Have fun you said you had a buddy in Spokane so you are not far from Lewiston ID so make sure to hit Lolo Pass you will not be sorry .
I would skip the Dragon unless you get there with lots of time to spare. There are so many more beautiful roads to ride in that same area.
I like utilizing the Harley Davidson Ride Planner accessible on the Harley Davidson website.
There are several dynamic parks in California to see, Yellowstone, Glacier Parks, of course the Sturgis, SD area, Milwaukee and its HD factory tours.....and there is a great ferry ride that takes you across one of the Great Lakes, Lake Michigan and delivers you in the beautiful state of Michigan, then theres the Mighty Mississippi River, Memphis, Tennessee as a whole, the Smokey Mountains, the Blue Ridge Parkway which takes you up through Appalachia. Man, there are too many places that are just plain beautiful and great to see on the bike. Use the Ride Planner. It allows you to customize your route, gives you times and mileages and allows you to modify. You can make a big ol loop all the way around all these places and bring you back to the left coast.
The fun is in the planning and mapping, but the journey begins when you fire up the V Twin....
