Default Thinking about Key West

I'm tired of winter and it'll be another couple months before the weather truly changes for good here in Northern Virginia. I'm thinking that a "ride to the sun" might be the ticket. I've never been to Key West and have it in mind that a cold brew on Duval Street might do me good.

I'm debating two questions...

When should I go? I'd just as soon avoid all the kids (and concomitant everything's busy and everything's expensive) during spring break. So I'm thinking maybe the first week of April? Does that make sense? Does it make a difference?

When is the best time - least traffic and hassle - to actually ride the 130 miles of the Overseas Highway? I was thinking of staying Saturday night in Florida City, and then riding across the Keys on Sunday morning. I'm assuming that any bad traffic then would be north-bound back towards Miami? Would it make much difference to stay Sunday night in Florida City and make the run on a Monday morning?

TIA for thoughts or advice from you veterans...

the worst traffic IMO is northbound from KW Sun AM to Sun PM. I wouldn't recommend heading southbound into a bunch of hung over/sunburned cagers trying to pass slow moving blue hairs in motorhomes. Been there, done that, now we prefer the Monday ride down. Stop at Alabama Jacks on Card Sound Rd for a bite to eat and head on your way, no crowded bars or restaurants all the way down.
