After 1 or 2 days in sturgis this year, I'm heading to the Little Bighorn Battlefield then either north into Glacier Nat'l Park then home to Michigan thru ND, MN, WI and into the UP, Or south into the Yellowstone, Grand Teton area. Any advice as to where to camp in these park areas, what to see and do or what not to see or do would be greatly appreciated!
Well depending on where you go, Cody WY has a great place to camp the Ponderosa Campground and its just an hour to the East entrance of Yellowstone. Go to the Irma hotel, see the rodeo, Buffalo Bill museum (actually 5 museums). Ride the Beartooth pass, Chief Joseph hiway.
Grand Tetons are one of the most magnificent sights to ride along. Grand Teton KOA for camping is a nice place.
There are so many suggestions depending on which way you go, you might get more responses if you pick a route, north or south.
I usually just opt for the KOA campgrounds or in the parks themselves. good luck and let us know which route you take.
If you head towards Yellowstone, I would recommend going by Devils Tower, just beyond
You could take hwy 14/16 out of Gillette nice ride, where Dances with Wolfs was filmed. stay on 14 thru Ucross stay with hwy 14/ I 90 until Burgess Jct (west of Sheridan Wy)-Then take Alt 14 This crosses the Bighorn Mnt range and is a great ride. from Cody head north to hwy 296 (Chief Joseph scenic byway- highly recommended) This road dead ends into hwy 212 ( Beartooth hwy) head east to top of mnt. GREAT ROAD!
Then you can turn around and head west right into Tower Junction ( N.E. entrance of Yellowstone park) Glacier N.P. is Great, but allow time for Yellowstone, its huge and there much to see.
Ride Safe!
I headed out early in the morning to the Battlefield. I was told it was a 6 hour ride from Sturgis. They meant One way! I took I90 3 hours out to Buffalo WY. The heat was getting to me and the high desert wind burn on my cheeks felt like they were turning raw. A guy in the bar told me about the rodeo in town. So it wasn't a total lost. I had heard about the other route to get there and wish I had taken it. But I'm told its not a very scenic battlefield.
