Leaving March 11 for a road trip to CA and back, I'd like to hit San Diego, then go up the coast to Monterey, then back, or vice versa. I've been planning the route and all that, just curious if someone has made a similar ride and has a suggested route to or from and some must see's along the way. Might be interested in riding with someone if we could meet up and do a few rides locally first to see how it goes. I'm in no hurry to get back and want to play it ear on where to stay each night.
Should be a great ride. Do 66 through AZ. Williams to Kingman is the nicest part. Oatman is a great tourist stop. From there down to Amboy in CA is good riding through the desert. You can head south to 29 Palms and then west to Yucca Valley to Hutchins Harley. Neat dealer. Over to Palm Springs (111) and over the mountain (74) to Anza and Temecula. South on 15 to San Diego.
North on the 5 to the 101 in LA to Ventura and Santa Barbara. 154 is a nice back ride into Solvang. From there find the 1 and stay on it up to Moneterey. While there head over to Pacific Grove and ride the coast around the bay. Awesome water colors.
Lots to see and do. There is a motorcycle museum in Solvang if you've got time. Nice old rare rides. Hearst Castle is so big it has three tours that can be done. Big Sur is a nice forest for camping. Lots of Kodak moments. Have fun.
