All I can say is route 70 out west over the rocky mountains and you won't be disappointed... made the trip from San Diego to PA in 3 days 25 yrs ago.... wish I could of spent more time west of the Rockies.... as watching them disappear in my mirrors and it was why I didn't stop till I hit PA... lonely east of them and very flat.....

I've done 3 of the really long ones like that: 2005, 2007 & 2008. Trip lengths were 13, 28, and 18 days, respectively. Easier to do the "no plan" when you have plenty of time. Less than 2 weeks makes it harder to truly get a "no direction" trip done. More than 3 days from home and you're just getting to a point to say there was no real plan when starting. Within 3 days each way and it's just a long round-trip. :-)

Always wanted to try it, just going where the headlight points and seeing where I end up. I've been able to run the long trips in the past but always had a basic direction and plan. Not this time. Flying blind with nothing but an idea. Ride south till I hit water, then ride West along the water till I hit Mexico, then ride northwest until I find my destination.
Have to say, though, that it's hard to truly go without some kind of destination. All 3 times I had a general plan, kind of like what you've got. In '05 the plan was to make it to Florida and back in 13 days. I did make a detour in Pensecola, and headed for the Dragon instead of going south toward Miami. It was more an interest in riding the Dragon than in any real desire to miss Miami (still haven't made it to Miami, either).

Best ride was in '07 when I was on the road for 4 straight weeks. I knew I wanted to be Oklahoma City at some point, so I started off for San Diego in late May then across toward Phoenix. Jeeeee-ZUS ... it is already hot in that part of the country even in May. Once I got to OKC I headed NE toward Indianapolis. Ended up heading straight east at KC and going for South Carolina instead. Then back across to Indy, Chicaog, and the upper plains before catching the western Rockies to home by the last week of June.

Worst part of the trip was a snowstorm outside of Yellostone. Thought I was freeze to death before I could farther south. :-)

So if you see me and the King along the road, throw some scrap food and point me at a gas station.
How will we know to watch out for you?

But seriously ... good luck with the trip.

Heading west last week of April into May. Destination is the Sedona area of AZ. No time frame for getting there or return home. Want to get south first then accross towards New Mexico.

Ditto! The 200 miles or so of I-70 just west of Denver are some of the most beautiful miles I've ever ridden.
