Had a hankerin' to do a good day trip before I'm out of commission for a few weeks (operation). So I started by riding my favorite loop in this area, Cherohala and Dragon loop. When I got to the Cherohala, the weather started going south very quickly. I was about 4500' when the rain started so I stopped and put on my rain jacket and headed out again. Didn't go very far before I ran into wet roads and it promptly soaked my pant legs and turned COLD. Figured since my pants were already wet I would go on and get past the high ground before I stopped again. The trees on top still have no signs of leaves yet because of the temps up there. Stopped just outside Robbinsville to fill up with gas and put my rain pants on since it looked like more rain was coming. Wet roads all the way to the Dragon but when I got to the twistys, roads were dry. No cops and people actually pulled over, in cars, to let you go by so I got my riding frustration out. So folks, if your coming this way to ride, the Dragon is in good shape but the Cherohala is still chancy.
One year I went over that skyway and it was 32 degrees. This was the third week of September. Last summer it was 105 and a mile up. Ya never know up there.
Don't know who did it but they have put some asphalt down on the shoulders of the road on the Dragon. Gives other bikers and cars a little bit of room to pull over and let traffic go by. Great idea whoever did it.

Glad to hear that.
It can be tough finding a safe place to pull over, take a break and watch the crotch rockets do their thing.............
