That oughta be fun, I wonder if there'll be so many cars on the road that you can't hardly ride through, thats the way it ususally is. Traffic is really awful in PF , I've heard of it taking 3 hours to come into town from Gatlinburg. I wish they'd get that by-pass finished to help releive the congestion. Stafford
The four-laning of U.S. 321 out of Gatlinburg to Pitman Center is complete. IMO, this doesn't help with traffic because most people want to go north toward PF on the "spur", U.S.441. 321 goes to Cosby, then hooks up with I-40 at Newport. The new Veteran's Parkway from Sev to Pf is open to traffic now. It replaces Middle Creek Road. We see plenty of bikes sitting on Hwy 66 on Friday coming into Sev from Exit 407. Avoid Exit 407 on Fridays coming into the Smokies. Use the exit at Newport for Hwy 411 or exit in the Knoxville area and find Chapman Highway(441), or come in from Lenoir City on U. S. 321. Yes, you can be stuck in traffic for three hours on 66.
We are planning a trip to Gatlinburg in May. Were isagood place to stay over a weekend that has covered parking, close to the sites and good food and drinks? Not cheap but not too expensive. Would rather spend money on other stuff sincewe don't plan on staying in the rooms the entire time.
I myself enjoy staying in Maggie Valley more. It is close enough and a lot quiter and cheaper.

I'll have to agree with Traceman, Maggie is a great place to stay if you are planning any tours of the gorgeous North Carolina side of the Smokies. We recently stayed a night in Gatlinburg at the Day's Inn so we could enjoy a long evening at Hogg's & Honeys. Covered Parking but unsecured and the place is older, not as clean looking as the others but all we needed was a clean bed. If you are thinking of seeing the Dragon and the Cherohala, Townsend is a great place to look for a place to stay. The Foothills Parkway between Walland and U.S. 129 is one of the prettiest rides in our neck of the woods. It's about 18 miles from Townsend to the Dragon. Townsend, like Maggie, is a lot quieter than Gatlinburg.
I totally agree. Maggie Valley is the place to go. Quieter, cheaper and the scenery is a lot better. There are lots of hotel/motels there that are really nice places, the last one we stayed at was the Smokey Mountian Lodge, great rates, clean rooms. Don't forget the "Wheels Through Time Motorcycle Museum" a realy great place to spenda day or just an afternoon. You will love all the Harley memorabilia http://www.wheelsthroughtime.com/. The town has some of the nicest foks you will ever run across, close to the Dragon's Tail and Cherokee! Much better than Gatlinburg, and lots more great memories!
Sean & I stopped in Maggie Valley on the way back from ******'s last Sept. I really, really like Maggie Valley. So much in fact we are taking our kids there this summer.
Hey Heather, Did you eat at Salty Dog's? Great little seafood place.. and notbad on the prices either! The "memory maker" defenitly works it's magic on the quiet side of the smokies!! Try this site...http://207.154.28.161/index.php?opti...&Itemid=81
That area is really nice and you can take off in any direction and have great rides. However, when it comes to more upscale restaurants and beverages, P.F. Gat. are alittle more appealing. The good thing is that no matter where you stay you can be anywhere you want in a very short span of time. I can be in Townsend in less than 30 minutes and I can be in Maggie Valley within 45 min or so depending on traffic. P.F. has quite a bit to offer families on vacation, lots of "kid" attractions and Gat. has more of a night time more adult feeling. It all fits together pretty well.

Yeah we actually did eat at Salty Dogs. Thanks for the site.
