Default Floyd, VA

I ride up to Floyd VA all of the time from my home in NC. I take NC96 up to Virgilina, VA and then head straight on through to US58 West. Take it on past Stuart VA until you get to Va Hwy 8 North. Curvy up to Floyd and Tuggle's Gap. Watch out for bears!

Now I am from NC and love my state as well as the rest of the beautiful south. But I must say there is nothing like riding across the hills of Virginia

Just something about it...

I live just south of Wilton just off NC 96 and really enjoy the ride to Virgilina. I spend a lot of time on the VA roads, and have noticed one thing about VA that NC doesn't have: lots of roads that have crests in the middle of curves. You rise up and don't know what the road is going to do until you hit the top. It's a little un-nerving to me. Another nice ride from NC is Bike Route 1. Beautiful countryside. I haven't done BR1 through VA, but that is on my list.

Planning with another guy to head to Front Royal, VA, Skyline Drive to BRP, BRP down to the Dragon and boring I-40 to head home. Sometime this month. Just finished the 20K service on the Electraglide and ready to go.

Are you anywhere near Wilton? (Int of NC 56 and NC 96)

We have land in Floyd and go there about 3 times a year...from my dads place in N.C. we take 52 up to Hillsville then 221 to floyd.....on the return we take the BRP back to 52..or 8 back to winston......good bike roads....plus...if ya take 52 thru Mt. Airy you can stop at Aunt Bea's and get some good grub and ice cream!!....

I'm actually closer to Virgilina now but I grew up near Wilton in Fairport, NC (close to Kittrell). I know that area extremely well. Actually, I used to cut up a bit around there back in the day.

I hear you on the road crests, plus they are often unmarked and narrow which can also be tricky. Great countryside though... real rural like I like it.

I'm in Raleigh, and follow BR1, north to Chase City VA often....great road, never went farther, as it seems to aim towards the "big cities" after. I have followed BR1 south of Apex.... but those straight flat roads hold no interest.

Go to the NC DOT site, and look around for the maps section, and find "bike routes" Lots of great route sugggestions in there... I like BR 2,3,4,5,6,7, and use them often for segments of rides. Back when gas was $1.25 I'd just fill the tank, and try to follow the bike routes

I usually hop on I-85 and aim for Hillsboro, then up NC-86 to US-158, to NC-66 to NC-8/86 to reach Stuart, and Floyd...Check ou VA-40 (east) next time you're up in the Stuart area... good curvy road !!!!

I love NC.... but I REALLY love Raleigh... beach a few hours in one direction... mountains same time, but different direction.

SW Virginia (including Floyd county) is one of my favorite places to ride and visit. The really fun and interesting riding is the little county roads, the ones not even on a VA state map. I'll leave it at that.
