Last weekend I hit one, it splattered the left side of my chest and bug juice sprayed all up over my face under the shield. I had dark colored bug particles flying around my face the next 10-15 seconds or so.
I'm glad my mouth was closed.

In New Jersey you can get your eye knocked out by a june Bug. Out west the mormen crickets try to smear you. Couple of years ago I almost bought it by a turkey buzzard on the BRP, that thing was huge.

It's what makes motorcycle touring so interesting.

That's a good way of putting it. Sounds like I will need to bring a couple of cans of bike cleaner with me and maybe suck it up and sport the full face. Should be interesting indeed.

They are very loud, and most places are no problem. On the plus side, when you ride through a swarm it kinda looks like your going warp speed as in the movies. I think there is a 7 year and a 13 year brood and this is the larger 13 year, but the ground has been torn up over the years for new buildings and roads and has lessened their numbers. I have not taken a direct hit to the face yet, but have done some head bobs.

They can make a ride challenging. My wife is happy I block most of them from hitting her. And they are big enough, you can usually see them coming. Hitting the windshield or fairing is no problem. Just a big mess to clean up later. If you can;t avoid being hit, at least you can brace for impact.
