Default Iron Butt ride

I'm planning to do this ride as soon as possible. Maybe as soon as this coming weekend or next...

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT...a999059be647cf

We'll be leaving from Calgary. If you're interested and think you're up for the ride, you're invited to join in. This is a one day ride so be forewarned, it's a long way.

Here's the ironbutt web site...

Good luck. I've been thinking of doing an iron butt ride as well. Let us know how it goes.

Good luck!
Good to see others getting into this type of riding. Sounds crazy but it is actually fun just hitting the road all day and into the night and riding.

Yup, and hopefully I won't have to ride at night. Being summer now we should have enough daylight to do a trip like this. We'll see I guess.

So I did it. Packed up yesterday and hit the road a 5 am. In Canada they have a kilometer version. 1600km is a 1000 miles. My planned ride was 17 and change. I wanted it a little longer just so it would be official. Problem is, I miss a turn off and ended up going a half hour off course then had to veer back to my route, ended up more like 1800 when I got home.

I found out that the stops really add up. You have to stop every time your route takes a corner so you can buy gas and get a gas receipt to prove you didn't cut the corner, and to document yoiur ride. Thing is, every time you stop it's 10 or 15 minutes, you usually clean your windshield, take a leak, maybe buy a snack sometimes. In all I had 9 gas stops, that's a couple hours right there. I didn't get home till almost midnight, and I left at 5 am.

So for anyone planning to do this sort of ride here's what I learned...
- Make your stops as efficient as you can, don't waste any time at the stops.
- If you get passed by a cager, tuck in behind him and chase him like a rabbit. Let him get the ticket.
- Use plenty of sun block, reapply during the day. I used it, but only in the morning, my face is red as a beat.
- Bring some food with you that you can eat right at the gas pump while your cleaning your windshield and gassing up. It's nice to have that energy boost.
- Know your route, use a gps if you have to. I wasted some time stopping and studying maps to figure out where to go.
- Drive safe, pay attention, don't loose your concentration, watch for deer. I always cover the front brake, but then I have cruise control so it's easy.
- One more thing... a driver back rest is the cats pajamas.

Congratulations Zeus!
Yea the stops for gas are important. That's why I like to minimize them if I can and go farther between gas stops.

Zeus, good job!
I like to ride long distances these days, I joke that my bike does not warm up till I put the second tank of the day in her. I combined my first IronButt rides, the Saddlesore and Bunburner.....now looking at some Bunburner golds in a row.....we'll see. Keep up the ridin'..........
