If all goes as planned I'll find myself up in Durango in August.
Scoping out a nice day ride, I came up with this route. For those familiar with the area, does this seem a good route to head out of Durango in the morning and be back before dark? It's under 400 miles, but it is lots of twisties.
Head east from Durango on US-160 thru Pagosa Springs, over Wolf Creek Pass, and on to South Fork.
Head north on CO-149 thru Creede and Lake City and on up to intersect US-50 (west of Gunnison). This section goes over Slumgullion and Spring Creek Passes.
West on US-50 over to Montrose, then south on US-550 back to Durango.
that will be a nice, and long ride. don't know if you are looking at other rides in the area, but Telluride and Uray, Black Canyon are worth the effort. ride safe and enjoy!
That is a great day ride -- have done it before and highly suggest it!!! Lunch in Lake City. Watch the weather. Several of the passes have been less than kind to us, resulting in sleet and very cold rain despite what appeared to have been good riding weather in the twisties and valleys.
I was just in Durango last week, 550 between Durango and Ouray is simply amazing. If you have a chance stop in at Silverton, cool little town. Also don't miss the 100 year old steam engines that run trains from Durango to Silverton daily, those things are very interesting.
