If it were me, I would B-line it from NYC straight to Hartford to save a little time and then spend it on points east. From the Cape Cod canal north to Bah Hahbah Maine, the coastline is awesome! Be sure to cruise the 15 miles or so that we have here in NH too...very scenic!

Yes that b-line idea is on my mind also in several areas to save time for Maine & the swingback up north thru the mountains! Our plan is to be rolling easterly and come into the coast just north of Newburyport and head north from there, is that the 15 miles or so you mean??????

That be it! From Boston, pick up Rt. 1 north in Topsfield, MA, swing off on Rt.110/1A and follow the coast....plenty to see and do all the way to Portsmouth. Just prior, you might swing off into Newburyport too. It's an old fishing town now with a ton of shops/restaurants along the Merrimac River. If you have loud pipes, go easy cruising though Hampton Beach. There's a feud going on between a few residents and the world!

You don't want 17. 17 is a slab.
I said 17m for a reason. It runs close to the interstates but is a 2 lane rd that goes through all the towns.

I don't know how much you want to avoid the I's but 84 from Port Jervis across the Hudson will help get into new england sooner. That section of I 84 road surface is good and never has traffic problems.

Once over the hudson you can take I 84 to NY 22 north to millerton & US 44 east through CT and RI, I prefer this to US 6. When you turn off 22 onto 44 in millerton on right side of main st there is a decent pizzeria.

About 10 min north of Millerton is Taconic State Park. Ore Pit pond, deep clear water. Also hike a short trail to Bash Bish Falls, pretty waterfall with a nice pool to swim. No life guards and no swiming signs but many swim there when there is no MA police on hand.

Also you can take 22 to NY 55 to Bulls Bridge, (google map will show you how to get to Dog Tail Corners rd and over the bridge) a covered bridge, into CT and take US 7 north to US 44. US 7 will bring you into Kent and Kent Pizzeria, again on your right hand side, great pizza.

Just got back from Augusta. I think I would advise against the US 1 Route. The Merrit ( RT 15 ) was a good road. 2 lanes in each direction and pretty good surface. OK for scenery. After that I was on slabs due to time, 84, 91 495, 95, 295. I don't think I'd recomend that either! 295 especially has a lot of construction with that grooved pavement stuff, not too much fun. If you're not rushing find a nice 2 laner and enjoy the trip, your moto map might be the best choice.

Rt7 is the best riding road in Connecticut. Only a few lights to stop at. Stay away from any road leading to Hartford. I am not sure if it is Rt 4 or 44 that runs to Hartford. But it runs right through all the Hoods. Not good. If you must, I95 runs along the bottom of the state an into Rhode Island, then up the coast. If you need to make time, that is the way.
