We are riding from Del to Maine later this month and need some info on how to get across CT.
1) The GF wants to take 1 along the coast, I was wondering how busy of a road it is this time of year and how long it will take to get across?
2) My thoughts were hitting 109 from New Milford cutting over to 66 by Middletown to Willimantic then 198 up to 44 and into RI.
(My route was from Motorcycleroads.us) I was thinking this would be a less crowded route but she likes the coastal thing???
I may stand corrected but Rt. 1 through CT = Rt. 95 which is one of the worst roads on this planet!!! I would suggest taking Rt. 15 to 91 into Hartford and then out via Rt. 384/Rt. 6 all the way to Providence. Rt. 15 is mostly two lanes each way with a lot of access roads/crossovers but a decent ride with half the traffic of Rt. 95. I haven't traveled Rt. 6 in 30 years but it used to be a nice ride.
US 1 will take forever to get through all the little towns and NYC. US 1 is not a rural road but in many parts a surban road. You will get to see many nice areas, wealthy areas, industrial areas, ghetto areas.
You can find yourself taking three hours on us 1 to cover the same distance as on a I slab. So unless you have a ton of time find another way.
You could look at taking 209 into NY then switching back and forth between ny 17m and us 6 all the way to Bear Mtn bridge and cross the Hudson and continue on 6 into Ct. Or once you hit the river you could go north on ny 9w and cross over farther N or cross at Bear Mtn and go north on ny 9 until you want to head east.
Crossing at Bear Mtn you go east till ny 22 or us 7 and head north then head east.
North of us 44 and 6, and better suited because you want to end up in Maine you can take ma 2 across northern MA (can take us 20 but more built up), or vt 9 into nh 101.
O.F.

I would like to stay away from the bigger citys like Hartford if possible, the GF get a bit on edge driving in a lot of traffic?
32VLD, that route looks nice, is 17 & 6 across NY busy??? We need to at least hit the tip of RI to say we were there, so that was the only reason to cut across CT.
Yea definitely stay away from Route 1, unless youre hitting it east of New Haven. If you're going to hit CT in the southwest, just go highway, as there's not all too much to see anyways. Personally, and if ya have time to kill, I'd take 84 into the state, then 7 north to 202 into litchfield and onwards toward Hartford, a little time on 84, then onto Rt 6 into RhodeIsland.
Otherwise, if you can miss rush hour, take rt 15 in, then rt9 down to the shore. Then Rt1 east. You'll be hugging the coast, and could even hit the casinos.
For a REAL nice ride, give yourself a little more time, and go up to Lancaster PA then Harrisburg then 15 up into NY. Work your way over to Lake Placid area & take the ferry across Lake Champlain, and go to ME through VT & NH. Anywhere east of the Poconos & even through CT, is gonna be riding in NYC traffic. If you've never ridden or driven anywhere within a hundred miles of NYC, it'll be the worst, most nervous ride of your life. Save Rt 1 for the car, for some other time.
Geezr, some of those areas will be our ride back to Indiana after Maine! That part of the trip is what we are most looking forward to, the only reason for the NYC & Boston skirts are to hit Del & around to RI so we can say that we were there. We have it all mapped out now and trying to hit those two states is making the trip longer, slower & I am sure more hetic!

Do any of you have suggestions to help us out????
Your option 2 would definitly be the best. You'll see the coast when you hit RI.
