I live in Northern Colorado, and have never been because Thunder in The Rockies is in my hometown - Loveland - the same weekend. I will be interested to hear other's take on Four Corners.
I go every year.
It's not really spread out. There are two different rallies going on.
One is in Ignacio and the other is in Mancos.
They are both within about 30 miles of Durango where rooms can be found at a reasonable rates.
Everyone should ride the million dollar highway at least once.
I usually head north from Albuquerque through Santa Fe, Espanola and Chama into Pagosa Springs and turn west to get to Ignacio or Durango. It's a much nicer ride than taking 550 to Farmington.
Ignacio is a tiny town with only a Casino for lodging. There is camping.
Mancos has no lodging at all but it is all about camping.
There are plenty of rooms in Durango and Farmington.
Went to the 4 Corners rally on Labor Day Weekend this past 2011. Rode in from Texas. It was an awesome ride from Albquerque, NM on the 550 to Durango, Co. I have an 07 RK Custom "FLHRS" & rode 2 up with the wifey. My baby was purring sucking up the cool air. People were real friendly and man that is a beautiful town Durango, Co. The riding was awesome & the red brothers were cool! Joan Jett rocked @ the casino. The rally was nothing special everybody selling the same cheap ****. But the Pow Wow was awesome and the surroundings. I must say it again one of the nicest rides, I have been on. Stayed in Durango at the Rio Grande Best Western centrally located. Nice little wholesome town. Will go again just for the ride.
It was a little chilly coming back had hoody & vest on. Passed some barhoppers on the way back that were acting cool with sleeveless tshirts man they looked cold. Saw them in my rear view mirror real fast.........Anyways would suggest the riding in Colorado, Durango. I would put it up there with Sturgis riding. Well getting sleepy. Knees to da wind!
We are doing the rally as part of a week-long getaway from the hellish heat here. Planning to be in Ignacio on the 1st, Mancos on the 2nd, and riding the beautiful CO roads ther rest of the time.
I was on the board of directors for the original 4 Corners Iron Horse Rally and because of the way the rally was screwed by the tribe, the community, and law enforcement, we finally had to give it up after 10 years. I have not been back since.
I still would never have anything to do with the portion of the rally that is part of the Ute tribe(Ignacio), but would consider going to Sugar Pine Ranch.
Turn The Page band (Bob Segar cover band) is playing at Sugar Pine this year, and they alone will be worth the 45.00 fee to get into Sugar Pine, plus the tent camping is free there. I have heard that Sugar Pine is a fun rally, and they support our local HOG group and we support them.
Riding in the area is among the best in the world, and well worth the trip. I just refuse to give money to anything related to Ignacio or the Ute tribe. Not big on spending my money in Durango either.
What happened with the tribe? We have never been there and want to have fun somewhere we are appreciated.
We had contracts with them to use the grounds and the agreement was the grounds would be ready each year. I had to take a week's vacation every year to go up and get things ready because the tribe never did. Be that as it may, every year the tribe changed the contract and demanded more money from the rally, even though all of our work was voluntary and all the money that the rally made, except the tribe's cut, went to charity. When we finally were unable or, unwilling to give them a bigger cut, they forced us out and gave a contract to a "for profit" organization that embezzled money, failed to pay for services and goods, and destroyed what the rally had been. After that, nothing was done with anything connected to the rally that involved the tribe. Now the tribe is trying to revive the rally at the Fairgrounds in Ignacio and line their pockets again.
If you want to have a good time with people that appreciate you, then take your money to the Sugar Pine Ranch in Mancos, Co. and avoid Ignacio. Sugar Pine has good bands, it is a nice area with good people, and is in the heart of some of the best riding in the world.
Have never been to this rally. Will be in Durango on Sunday, Sept 4 returning from a three day visit to Moab, UT. We ride the Durango area several times a year to beat the heat here in the Key.
