It's been years, so I'm not sure what it's like right now. But Hwy 83 runs from Canada (near Regina) all the way to Mexico. It skirts the Black Hills to the East and is a pretty straight shot from Minot, ND to at least Wichita, Kansas. You can make a lot of time on that road. Back then, it was a two laner for most of the trip but really good shape. I kept the car pegged at around 110 mph most of the way and never saw a LEO until I hit Wichita.
Don't know if that's a route you'd want to take, but thought I'd throw it out there since you're wanting to make some time.
Gives me an excuse to stop by and see relatives in Regina.
Btw guys thanx for the info and comments. I got this thread on my favs and will have it handy when it comes to time to do the actual planning.
One thing to be careful of, especially coming from Canada: the Texas summers are BLISTERING. Be mindful of that, especially in the areas where there is good riding. The Hill Country is super cool for riding, and there are a bunch of nice towns to stop in. Some of them include Luckenbach, Fredericksberg, and Jefferson. Good luck and ride safe.
