Can this trip be done in 5 days? how's the weather in May? Las Vegas to Santa Barbara,Ca Then up to Santa Cruz,Ca over to Sacramento,Ca to Reno,Nv. Then follow the 93/95 down through tonopah, Nv. Beatty and into Las Vegas.
Looks like 350 Miles a day.of course the side to Ocean,Alcatraz,Virgina City,Scotty's Castle,Ryolite.
A lot of riding. Early starts will be a must. Weather could be the most beautiful you'll ever ride in or it could rain a bit. But that's a good month for weather for the most part. You need to take the 1 from San Luis Obispo up to Santa Cruz. It'll be some of the best coastline you could ever ask for.

Ill second the highway 1 detour although it will add about 3 hours to the trip but its totally worth it!
i'll second the advice to take.hy.1. we took it this summer from l.a. to el waco wa.( it's 101 thru Oregon and Washington) great great ride with very light traffic.
I rode the 101 from San Jose south through LA in August. It was a great ride. The worst part of the trip will be the ride south through Nevada. Not much to see and desolate.

Yeah i know that part of the country too well. I lived in Tonopah for 5 years. that's why i chose that way. I want to hit Virginia City,Scotty's Castle, and Ryolite again on the bike.
I live in Sacramento and its been pretty cold. Like all said before, that stretch of hwy 1 is hard to beat. Watch for chp though. They cruise that section from Monterey to SF pretty hard.

Sacramento doesn't get snow. But head up into the Sierras a bit and you can get snowed in. May should be pretty nice weather for most of your trip. Most of the hiways will be open in May over the mountain if weather is normal. You have three or four choices to pick from. 80. 4. 50. 88. If I was doing it again I'd take the 4 or the 88 east to the 89 and then south to the 395. Gorgeous scenery.
