Swifty...since you're from WA State you already know about National Forest/BLM campgrounds in the West. You can find a good directory with a search of some .gov sites. As far as other free/low cost camping area, take a look at this web site for some ideas once you get into the Midwest and beyond. Recommend you get a smartphone if you don't already have one. They're great for weather radar and looking stuff like this up when you're out there.
As for your long days and where to stay, secure your campsite early and enjoy. Set up camp and eat a $5 footlong or something you picked up. I read on another site something like this - If you are staying in a motel, you are getting a break from your ride experience. If you are camping, you are extending your ride experience.

If I am staying in a motel, I am getting a good night's sleep and a hot shower. If I am camping, I wake up stiff, sore and smelly. My idea of roughing it is a motel with no Wi-FI.

After reading a bit of your replies, i'm wondering where i should stop and sleep at for the night if a rest stop isn't the best place. I can't imagine being allowed to camp at a city park for the night...
...stopping at any little town and either asking the locals will usually get you a proper place to set up a tent. Way better than a rest stop. Very easy to do and no need to plan just stop early enough to set up.
