For the last 3 yrs, I've been doing a lond road trip with a theme..
usually 3-4,000 miles up to 2 weeks long.
Sept 2011 Was my first one witha "Railroad / Railfan" theme
I stopped at all the heavy rail lines all thru the east central Appalachians.
I did Gettysburg in July 2010. If you are a history nut and know about the units that fought there it is inspiring to see. I do not know about any other Civil War battle sites and how they are set up. Great trip.
This year we are going to Yellowstone National Park, hit Bear Tooth Pass and hopefully hit Little Big Horn Battle Field on the way home.
I hope to (in the next 5 years or so) ride the entire Oregon Trail from beginning to end, stopping at as many landmarks, historic markers, and visible ruts as possible. It will take several weeks and lots of vacation time. I might have to do it in stages over a couple of years.
